Hello,

I'm interested in hearing any opinions on MBA programs as they relate to the energy industry.

I'm considering applying to B-School for a career pivot, more than a wholesale career change. I've got a MS in Physics, spent my first three professional years doing purely technical work, then transitioned to technical project management (some international) work for the last three years, I'd like to make a pivot into more broadly managerial and development areas.

I've looked into a variety of programs from IE to Penn State, I'd be interested in hearing if there a any schools in particular I should look at? Avoid? Are there things I've probably not considered?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Take a look at McCombs. They have great energy placement due to recruiting relationships in the industry and geographic location. They also have probably the most robust energy specific class work and electives - you can choose to get an energy finance concentration. They have an energy club and a cleantech club as well.

For something a little lower in the rankings check out Rice, Jones.

For a top ranked program look at Haas, especially for clean and alternative energy.

Thanks for the suggestions. I find it interesting, and yet not too surprising that both Cal and Texas should be at or near the top for energy related work. They have two of the best energy related engineering programs in the world as well.

Hii,

I am a marine engineer by profession with 4 years of exp in shipping industry.. Currently I am working with BP shipping (the oil major) for past 3 years.. My job profile includes operation and maintenance of various machines (Diesel Engines, Boilers, Steam Turbines, Pumps, etc) on board oil tankers and carrying out routine cargo watches during loading and unloading of cargo (Oil).

I wish to change my job profile and enter energy sector. Kindly advise if my experience and qualifications have any scope to enter this industry.

If yes, which colleges should I look forward to..

I am admittedly biased as our Energy Club co-president, but I would urge you to consider Duke's Fuqua School of Business in a bit more detail if you are interested in a career in Energy from any functional perspective. The Duke University Energy Initiative (DUEI) and our EDGE organization have been around for much longer than similar organizations at other schools. Further, we are the only top 10 business school to have a concentration entirely focused on Energy Finance and a separate concentration in Energy and the Environment. Lastly, I would emphasize our international student presence (over 40%, which is much higher than other schools) and focus on experiential learning in energy (see our Energy GATE program) as well.
