Hi,

I took the GMAT online yesterday and received an unofficial score of 760 (Q48/V47/IR8). In all my mock exams, I got Q49 or Q50, which would translate to a 770 or 780 with a V47. My verbal subscores in mocks, however, were not as consistent, ranging from V41 to V47. Would it be worth my time to attempt a retake and get a higher overall score? More specifically, is there any significant difference in the eyes of AdCom between a 760 and a 770?

For additional context, I am an ORM American citizen with a 3.5 GPA (4.0 major GPA) from a T50 public state school with an undergrad degree in business. I currently work in Big 4 Advisory and will have 3.25 years of work experience upon matriculation if I apply R1 next year. ECs include pro bono consulting volunteering, actively contributing to a number of internal firm initiatives, and working with a dean at my alma mater to assist with the marketing of a new program.

Appreciate all feedback, thanks!

hi account567
Congrats for your good 760 GMAT score !
Since you got V47 which seems to be on higher side as fas as your mocks are concerned, you really need to work hard to get a higher GMAT score.
You please consult with your admission consultant regarding importance of 760+ GMAT score on your applications for specific B-schools on case basis.

Hi account567,
Even if your profile wasn't this strong (it is), scores beyond a 750 do not make a significant difference to the AdCom. They want to admit well rounded leaders of tomorrow.
Focus therefore on a compelling story, weaving leadership and empathy into your experiences and show your potential.

Hope that helps

Hi account567

I agree with IvyLeagueEdge. As your verbal scores have been ranging on a lower end, the score that you have got is fantastic and should definitely consider applying with that one without wasting your precious time on retaking the exam.

Do not retake the exam. It will be a huge waste of time (even just the 3+ hours to take the exam) because, as noted above, your profile will not be enhanced at all.

Your energies are best spent focusing on building up your profile. If you want to get into a top program, crush it at work and your extracurricular activities. Then, spend time researching your favorite schools and building relationships with students, alumni, professionals and, to the extent possible, the AdCom. Then, when the time is right, write killer essays. That's the ticket to maximizing your chances in this process given where you stand with this great GMAT score. You can't control where you went to school, your GPA, major, ethnicity, etc. so don't dwell on those factors either.

If we can be of any help, don't hesitate to reach out. We also offer an Advanced Planning Program if you are interested in a few coaching sessions to assess and build out your profile in advance of applying.

Hi account567,

First off, a 760/Q48 is an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to ANY Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is not necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

The level of accuracy at the V45+ level gets pretty steep. A V48, for example, is the result of 1 incorrect counted question. You may increase your Quant but have a lower Verbal. All the best if you feel it would really bug you to not try at least once to get a Q50 with a high Verbal score. Some Quant and Verbal tips on the gmatknight blog you may find helpful.

Hi account567,

The good news is that you have 760 in your back pocket, so from my perspective, you have nothing to lose by giving the GMAT once more shot. If your score does not improve, then just use your 760 and call it a day.

Congratulations on a great GMAT score. However, a retake to gain 20 points is not advised, considering a V47 score which yo already boast of.
