Last week I finished reading through
MGMAT Foundations of Math/Verbal and used this week to establish a baseline score. I have never done a CAT exam before, and have only sat a single standardised exam, hence I decided to take a
MGMAT CAT to get a feeling of how a GMAT exam functions.
On Monday I sat a
MGMAT CAT scoring a 620 (Q40 V35) which I was very happy with and therefore was feeling confident sitting the first official practice test the day after Christmas, but to my surprise I only managed to score a 530 (Q32 V32) almost a 100 point decrease from
MGMAT #1!. I sat both exams at 0800, I attempted all sections under replicated exam conditions, and the orders were V->Q->IR->AWA.
WTF is wrong with me?? I constantly read posts/feedback describing how
MGMAT is harder than GmapPrep, whereas here I am with an 8 point decrease on Quant. I'm currently in my final year of undergraduate studying a dual degree of engineering and business management with a GPA of 4.0/4.0. The three core engineering math subjects I have taken thus far I achieved 95%, 99% and 98% respectively but it seems I am a potato when attempting Quant. Now, I know that 'Quant' in the GMAT stands for Quantitative Reasoning and doesn't just require someone to regurgitate mathematical formulas, but I would have thought that I could have done better than 32nd percentile!
The only issue I faced while sitting GmatPrep #1 was that the loading screen would take 30 seconds to 1 minute to change to the next question on a number of occasions. Although this happened towards the end of each section, I would estimate I lost about 3-4 minutes on both Quant and Verbal.
The GmatPrep score is very disheartening. Although I have a long time till I will sit the exam (~July 2020 or December 2020), I feel defeated and I will never reach my goal of 750. With a baseline score of 620 I thought that achieving this goal was possible, but now seeing a 530 appear on the official practice exam really makes me doubt my ability.
