Re: x and y are integers. If x + 1 > 0 and xy > 0, which of the following [#permalink]
I'm confused as to why E isn't the answer because based on the statement x+1>0, x can equal a negative number greater than -1 (-0.2, -0.5, etc). If x is negative then Y can also be negative to make the statement xy>0 true.

x and y are integers. If x + 1 > 0 and xy > 0, which of the following must be true?

A. y > 0
B. y < 0
C. y > x
D. y < x
E. None of these

I'm confused as to why E isn't the answer because based on the statement x+1>0, x can equal a negative number greater than -1 (-0.2, -0.5, etc). If x is negative then Y can also be negative to make the statement xy>0 true.

Pay attention to the highlighted part in the question. Given that x is an integer, x > -1, and xy > 0, x can be 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Re: x and y are integers. If x + 1 > 0 and xy > 0, which of the following [#permalink]
x and y are integers,

condition 1 --> x+1 > 0 --> means that x is greater than -1 --> thus x will be zero or more
condition 2 --> x*y > 0 --> means that either x > 0 and y > 0, or x<0 and y<0, furthermore, we know that neither x nor y are zero

from condition 1 we know that x is at least 0, meaning that, given the second condition, we are fore sure in the case where both x and y are positive. thus A

as for the others
A. y > 0 --> OK
B. y < 0 --> not possible since x*y >0 and x is greater than -1 and a INTEGER
C. y > x --> we cannot know this. We only know that x and y are positive
D. y < x --> same
E. None of these --> answer A is fine, so it cannot be E

IMO A
