Actually, I felt my essays were straightforward and to the point, answered the question, balanced the examples I used for each reply and that was it. That seemed to work out fine for short essays (400 - 500 words) but not so much for longer ones (such as Stanford's 4 pages guideline).

First time I saw Stanford's 4 page recommendation, I thought someone was taking the piss.

11 page recommendation! What did he/she write about ? After 10 pages, it must be pretty much down to your underwear size :).
