Hi All, I did my gmat prep for 4 months but could only reach a highest score of 605. My first official mock was 595 and after prep highest it has once gone to 655 but on an average it has been 635.

Recently I gave a gre mock w/o any prep and I got 311. I am really confused that should I stick to gmat or go switch papers and start gre prep?

If anyone has been in similar situation/dilemma or anyone has any guidance could you please help me out?
605 GMAT focus is a little over a 70th percentile score. 311 GRE depending on sectional breakdown is a 60th percentile score. You need to re-assess if you're better at logic (which GMAT emphasise on) or have stronger language and memory skills (which GRE somewhat selects for). Also check which program are you aiming for and what is the average acceptance score for that program. Most places have their average GRE and GMAT scores listed online.

Most applicants treat the GMAT as a hurdle. Strong applicants treat it as the steering wheel of their application year.

Imagine having a real score in June. School choices sharpen. Retake decisions are calm. Round 1 is possible.

Now imagine still guessing in September. Deadlines are close. Work is intense. Slots are limited. Every decision feels rushed and expensive.

The difference is not ability. It is timing.

An early attempt removes uncertainty while there is still time to act. A strong score builds confidence. An average score leaves room to improve. A weak score still gives you a second chance.

Mocks cannot fully recreate test-day pressure. Only consistent performance can.

One great score is hope. Repeated scores are reliability. This degree can alter your career trajectory for decades.

Give yourself time to earn the score you truly need.

Momentum comes from moving early, not scrambling later.

*From 585 to 685 on the GMAT* Pearl’s improvement didn’t come from studying harder — it came from changing how she approached preparation. In this conversation with GMATNinja, she shares:
- Why perfectionism was hurting her score
- What she learned after taking a long break
- How she rebuilt momentum before her second attempt
- The mindset shift that helped her reach 685

If you’re preparing for the GMAT or considering a retake, this story is both practical and reassuring.
