Senersd INSEAD alumna here and happy to advise.

Institutional sales/capital markets sales is the most challenging pivot due to the inherent bias for MBA hires who already have prior front-office experience, or at least strong exposure (e.g., Sales and Trade internships, CFA, finance-focused roles).

The others can be attained if you start networking and researching these pipelines with utmost conviction. The more you speak with people who are currently in these careers, the better connection you will be able to establish with your transferable skills. In fintech strategy careers, you may showcase your understanding of trading systems, data, client workflows, etc. In management consulting, you will need to find out what contribution area focus you should showcase for a viable pivot. You may position your story around ops transformation, for example, but of course, this is very surface-level. Product roles can be a good fit, for example, in firms building trading infrastructure or platforms. Strategy and COO track roles focused on internal strategy, business management, and inner-office functions can work out too.

Hi all,

I’m currently considering applying for an MBA at INSEAD or LBS and would love to get your thoughts on realistic post-MBA exit opportunities based on my background.

I’m a bi-lingual 27-year-old based in Australia (grew up in Europe and have EU + Aus passport), working at a BB IB in a management role within electronic trading middle office. I manage a small APAC team, work closely with global trading and sales desks, and have been heavily involved in process improvement (STP, data analytics), risk management and product specific client servicing.

My goals are to pivot out of middle office into something more commercial and client-facing—ideally within markets, fintech, or sales/strategy-oriented roles.

Some of the areas I am open to:

  • Fintech strategy or B2B sales (e.g. payments, crypto/Defi/blockchain, SaaS platforms)
  • Management Consulting
  • Institutional/capital markets sales
  • Product or GTM roles in trading tech firms
  • Strategy/COO track at a financial institution

Preferences would be to relocate to Europe, UAE, Saudi or Singapore.
I’m currently studying for the GMAT and plan to apply for 2027 intake. Given my background, how realistic are these exit opportunities post-INSEAD or LBS? Would I be at a disadvantage coming from markets middle office, and how well do these schools support pivots into front office/ client facing roles?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar transition or knows people who have.
Thanks in advance!

Senersd - Both INSEAD and LBS are (generally) strong in consulting careers, with LBS also being equally strong in finance careers.

Given your experiences, transitioning to a consulting or strategy role within fintech would be more likely. Product or GTM roles can also be an interesting pivot. Capital markets sales roles are tricky unless you bring in prior exposure in finance and/ or geo-specific know-how.

A good exercise to do would be to search on LinkedIn for alum in your target roles, and look at their backgrounds. Speaking to people who transitioned would also be ideal, to gather their first-hand insights.

Hope this helps.
