A student has to select 3 subjects out of 6 subjects Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Computer Science. If he has chosen Mathematics, What is the probability of Biology being also chosen?

A. 2/3
B. 3/5
C. 2/5
D. 1/3
E. 1/6

Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions: 700 Level Questions

Imagine there are slots being taken up by each subject. We have 3 slots to fill. We're told Math already fills slot 1 - ok great, we move on.

Let's calculate total ways we could fill 2 slots with 5 subjects first:

\(C^5_2=\frac{5*4}{2}=10\)

To find favourable outcomes, we need all the options where Biology is chosen. To find this, we can consider Biology "locked in" to slot 2, which leaves only variations of slot 3 for all the different options with Biology. There are 4 subjects to choose from, and 1 slot to fill.

\(C^4_1=\frac{4}{1}=4\)

Now we can calculate probability.
\(\frac{4}{10}=\frac{2}{5}\)

Thus answer is C.
