say current age of jack = x
current age of renee = y

10 years ago, (x-10) = 2 (y-10)
we get, x = 2y - 10

now two years from now,
(x+2) = 1.5 (y+2)
we know x= 2y-10. we can use that and find the value of y.
2y-10+2 = 1.5y + 3
we get, y= 22

x = 2y -10 = 2(22)-10 = 34

so current age of jack = 34 and renne = 22

so ten years ago, y=12 and x= 24
so five years ago, y= 17 and x= 29
the sum = 46

choice C

Let Jack's current age = J and Renee's current age = R.
10 years ago: J - 10 = 2(R - 10), which gives J - 10 = 2R - 20, so J = 2R - 10.
Two years from now: J + 2 = 1.5(R + 2), which gives J + 2 = 1.5R + 3, so J = 1.5R + 1.
Setting equal: 2R - 10 = 1.5R + 1, so 0.5R = 11, giving R = 22.
Then J = 2(22) - 10 = 34.
Five years ago, Jack was 34 - 5 = 29 and Renee was 22 - 5 = 17.
The sum of their ages 5 years ago was 29 + 17 = 46.
