A The first boldface is not a premise of the curator's argument. It belongs to the opposing historians' position.

B The first does present evidence, but for the historians' claim, not for the curator's conclusion.

C The first does not defend any assumption made by the curator, it supports the opposing view.

D The first is supporting evidence, not the central claim being challenged.

E Right answer. The first boldface supports the historians' position. The second explains the curator's reasoning for rejecting that position.

A -> The first can be considered a premise. The second does not address an objection to the curator's conclusion
B -> The first is evidence. The second is incorrect as it does not support the curator
C -> Both statements appear wrong
D -> The first may be considered to be challenged by the curator. The second is not the conclusion.
E -> This correctly identifies the two boldface statements.

Option E
Bunuel
Museum curator: Some old buildings in our city have been reconstructed after earthquakes, and lively new public spaces have emerged within them. Some historians maintain that these reconstructed buildings are as worthy of admiration as the originals. They preserve the same architectural style and are often indistinguishable from the older structures. However, part of what makes historic buildings valuable is that they are authentic physical links to earlier generations. That sense of authenticity is diminished when a building is known to be a reconstruction.

Which of the following best describes the roles of the two portions in boldface?

A. The first is a premise of the curator’s argument; the second addresses an objection to the curator’s conclusion.
B. The first presents evidence for a claim; the second explains why that evidence supports the curator’s conclusion.
C. The first defends an assumption made by the curator; the second explains why the curator’s conclusion undermines the position that the curator challenges.
D. The first is the claim that the curator directly challenges; the second is the conclusion defended by the curator’s argument.
E. The first is used to support the position that the curator opposes; the second elaborates on the justification for the curator’s conclusion.

Let's discuss each statement one by one =>

A=> This is not a premise of the curator's argument but it's a position on the historians that the curator is opposing. Eliminate
B=> The historian's argument is not supporting the curators point. Eliminate
C=> The first states an opposing view and does not defend an assumption. Eliminate.
D=> The second is not just the conclusion but an explanation to it. Eliminate
E=> Correct choice => First is used to support the historian's claims that the 'new buildings are worth of admiration' and the second is a reason behind the conclusion of the curator about what the buildings lack. Correct.

Correct Answer => E

The first boldfaced portion and second boldfaced portion do not align. So that should be a way to cancel options.

(A) The first boldfaced is NOT a premise of the author's argument. It's part of something the author doesn't support. So (A) is eliminated.

(B) It states that the first one is 'evidence' but, honestly, the first boldfaced is an opinion. Even if that were right, the second half states that it supports the author's conclusion, which it doesn't. So, (B) is eliminated too.

(C) Despite what the option states, the first boldfaced does not defend the curator's assumption. In a way, it is being used against the curator's position...like a concession. So (C) can be eliminated.

(D) The author does not challenge the claim mentioned in the first boldface. And the second boldface isn't a conclusion but more of a support/reason. So (D) is out.

(E) That leaves us with E. The first portion does indeed support the position the author opposes and since the second is a reason supporting the author's viewpoint, it aligns with what (E) states.

Answer is (E)

A First it's the historians' premise, not curator's.

B The second does not support the first's claim, it counters it.

C First it's not curator's assumption.

D No, first is not the entire claim historians make. Their claim is "as worthy of admiration".

E First supports the position the curator opposes (historians' view). Second explains why authenticity matters. Correct answer.

The answer is E

A The second is not addressing an objection, it's giving a direct reason for his view.

B The first is indeed evidence for a claim, but it's the historians' evidence for their claim.

C The second is a premise for the curator's view, not an explanation of logical undermining after the conclusion.

D The first is not the main claim he challenges, it's the reasoning given for that claim.

E CORRECT. First bold is used by historians to support the view "reconstructions are as admirable", a view the curator opposes. Second bold explains why the curator thinks reconstructions are less admirable, because authenticity is diminished.

The correct answer is E

IMO the correct answer should be E.

First boldface text seems part of premise.
It is a fact that reconstruction preserves same old style. It is neither a claim, not an assumption as mentioned in option C & D.

Second boldface text seems elaboration of conclusion itself.
It is neither a objection to conclusion nor evidence in support of conclusion as mentioned in option A & B.

Conclusion 1 - reconstructed buildings are worthy of admiration as originals

Curator doesn't agree with above conclusion.

1st Bold s.- providing the support to above conclusion.

2nd Bold S. --> Supporting curator's conclusion which doesn't consider reconstructed buildings as valuable as originals.

Which of the following best describes the roles of the two portions in boldface?

A. The first is a premise of the curator’s argument; the second addresses an objection to the curator’s conclusion. - Opposite
B. The first presents evidence for a claim; the second explains why that evidence supports the curator’s conclusion. - Incorrect
C. The first defends an assumption made by the curator; the second explains why the curator’s conclusion undermines the position that the curator challenges. - 1st is not defending curator's assumption.
D. The first is the claim that the curator directly challenges; the second is the conclusion defended by the curator’s argument. - Could be! first part is correct, but 2nd is not the conclusion.
E. The first is used to support the position that the curator opposes; the second elaborates on the justification for the curator’s conclusion. - - Both bold statements description almost matches with ours hence, correct answer!

A. Irrelevant as the first supports the opposing argument and isnt a premise of the curator's argument
B. Irrelevant as the first supports the opposing claim and not the curator's
C. Irrelevant as the first contradicts the curator and doesent defend the assumption made by the curator
D. Irrelevant as the second is a reason and not the conclusion defended by the curator's argument
E. Relevant as the first boldface is not the curator's view and a reason historians give to support their position of opposing the curator. The second boldface explains the lack of value for reconstructed buildings which is not exactly retelling the conclusion but giving an important reason for it, that is, it is giving a justification to the curator's conclusion

First BF is a reason for historian's conclusion.
second BF is supporting premise for author's (museum curator's) conclusion.

A.First is not a premise for curator's conclusion and 2nd is not an objection it is inline with curator's argument.
B.first is evidence for a claim. But 2nd is not the explanation of why "that evidence" support's curator conclusion. Instead it has its own explanation.
C.first doesn't defend the assumption of curator. It is only saying stuff that supports historians.
D.first is not a claim
E.Correct. inline with my description above
