Not sure, but grammatically B is the only option that i could bank upon.
proved useful: doesn;t make sense.
proved itself useful: made sense.
Simple past:doesn't make sense, but present perfect made.
Hence chose B

A) It seems as if the robot is currently walking on four legs which can't be the case as we are talking about 'a' robot instead of a particular robot.
B) same as A
C) with 'proves', this comes out as a statement of fact which is something to notice. 'as transporting' is incorrect construction and messes up the meaning.
D) Fixes the problems and conveys clear idea.
E) This seems as if 'it proves itself useful' and the 'transporting' are not connected. D does a better job at conveying the idea.

I will go with option D

The sentence is framed in such a way that as per French Military officials, a certain robot that walks on four legs has proved. Now A, b, and C is giving Verb+ing making the sentence awkward, it should be a robot that has this feature and it is useful, so that's why we will eliminate A, b, and C.
Now E is itself makes the sentence wrong.

So D is the answer.
