12 Days of Christmas 🎅 GMAT Competition with Lots of Questions & Fun

Reporting that one of its many challenges had been the highly publicized break, over creative differences, with the director of the film, the studio confirmed that it would suspend production on its adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Nostromo.

(A) its many challenges had been the highly publicized
(B) its many challenges has been the highly publicized
(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized
(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized
(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized

I will go with option A

The challenges is faced by the studio, so "its" is right. It should further use past perfect tense "had been" to make us understand that the break occurred before the studio confirmed the suspension of production. Option B, C, D is using present tense, so wrong.

(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized
-- present tense is not required here

(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized
-- 'their' is incorrect antecedent

(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized
-- 'their' is incorrect antecedent

Option A

(A) its many challenges had been the highly publicized - "had" is used when there are two actions in the past. We use "had" for the action that is in the deeper past and simple past tense for the action that is in the recent past. Since there are two actions in the past - the studio confirmed (recent) and one its many challenges had been the highly publicized break (deeper) - the usage of "had been" is correct.
(B) its many challenges has been the highly publicized - "had been" would be appropriate here
(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized - usage of simple present tense is incorrect
(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized - no antecedent for plural pronoun "their"
(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized - no antecedent for plural pronoun "their"

IMO answer is (A)

(A) its many challenges had been the highly publicized

Past tense has been used. Hence ok and uses of its also fine.

(B) its many challenges has been the highly publicized

Since in non underline part we have used would so we need past tense

(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized

Since in non underline part we have used would so we need past tense.

(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized

In the non underlined part studio has been mentioned using 'it'. So we need to maintain uniformity

(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized

In the non underlined part studio has been mentioned using 'it'. So we need to maintain uniformity

(A) its many challenges had been the highly publicized
usage of 'had been' ie, past perfect tense is incorrect since the challenge continues into the present

(B) its many challenges has been the highly publicized
challenge began in the past, and continues into the present..usage of 'has been' to depict this timeline is correct

(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized
creative differences commenced in the past..hence, 'has been' should be used

(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized
incorrect S-V agreement ; creative differences commenced in the past..hence, 'has been' should be used

(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized
incorrect S-V agreement ;also, usage of 'had been' ie, past perfect tense is incorrect since the challenge continues into the present

(B) is the answer

(B) its many challenges has been the highly publicized - This option contains a subject-verb agreement error. The correct form is "have been" instead of "has been" because "challenges" is plural.

(C) its many challenges is the highly publicized - Similar to option (B), this choice has a subject-verb agreement error. The correct form is "are" instead of "is."

(D) their many challenges is the highly publicized - This choice introduces a pronoun error. The sentence uses "its" earlier in the sentence to refer to the studio, so changing to "their" is inconsistent. It should be "its."

(E) their many challenges had been the highly publicized - Similar to option (D), this choice introduces a pronoun error by using "their" instead of "its." The correct pronoun to refer to the studio is "its."

So, the most appropriate choice is (A) "its many challenges had been the highly publicized" as it is grammatically correct and maintains coherence in the sentence.

So Answer A
