Should be simple.

1.2*5/8 = 6/8 = 3/4 = 0.75

Do we get such questions on GMAT, even at the initial level?

100% of 5/8 is 5/8 (1)

and

20% of 5/8 = 20/100*5/8 = 1/5*5/8 = 1/8 (2)

Adding (1) & (2) we get 5/8 + 1/8 = 6/8 = 3/4 = 0.75

Therefore the answer is D

South Indian Methodology makes this rather easy-

120 percent of any number is x times 1.2- do not confuse with a 120 percent increase which is x times 2.2. Anyways, convert 120 percent into fraction 1 and 2/10 but this could be simplified even more 1 1/5 so 1 (1/5) equals 6/5

6/5 x 5/8 = 30/40 = 3/4 = .75

\(120\)% \(= \frac{120}{100} = \frac{6}{5}\)

SO, \(120\)% of \(\frac{5}{8}\) = \(\frac{6}{5}\)*\(\frac{5}{8}\)

Or, \(120\)% of \(\frac{5}{8}\) = \(\frac{6}{8}\) = \(\frac{3}{4}\) = \(0.75\)

Hence, answer will be (D) 0.75

120% as a fraction is 6/5

Since we are asked to find out 120% of 5/8,
we need to find out 6/5*5/8 or 3/4
3/4, expressed as a fraction is 0.75(Option D)
