The following appeared in a proposal for a high school's annual fundraising event:
"In order to earn the most money for supplemental school programs, we will have larger and more thrilling rides at this year's School Fair, including a ferris wheel that is twice as tall as last year's ferris wheel. In addition, the game vendors will award more expensive prizes and the food stalls will showcase a variety of upscale international dishes. As a result, we will be able to charge a higher entrance fee and the dollar amount we earn via our commission on the vendors' revenues will be higher than it was last year."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
My Essay
The proposer has put forward a plan that would help in raising more funds this year as compared to in last year. He/she plans to include more expansive rides this year than were in last year and variety of international dishes at food stalls as a result of which the organising committee will be able to charge a higher entry fee. However, this argument is seriously flawed.
First, the basic assumption of the argument is that the proposer is convinced that atleast same number of people will turn up for the event this year as had last year. Since, we are not given any information about the date on which the even is planned to be organised, we can't be sure whether the same number of poeple will attend the event as had last year. For example, if the event is being planned on a weekday, then one can't expect a lot of people to appear for the event.
Second Depending on the spending capacity of the people they will decide whether to attend the event. Money is the major concern for people and one can't simply expect the people to pay more for a larger ferris wheel. Besides, the international dishes that are being planned to be prepared for the event may not be of the masses liking.
Third, for the given fee people may choose to visit a better place. The argument doesn't state the exact amount that will be charged. The increment can be anywhere from 1% to 100% or even greater than 200%.
To conclude I would say that the argument is not at all convincing. In an year the economy can change a lot, impacting the earnings of individuals. Both money and time are of essence. One has to do a research on the various demographies of the region before coming to such a strong conclusion. The argument would have been strengthened if the proposer would have sited some sort of research about the tastes of people. The proposer could have sited the feedback received from people last year. The plan as of now is not very strong and prone to failure.
