Even though the GSB is in the top of this ranking I think this is very strange.

For me it seems that it's that kind of thing: they decided a methodology, they closed it and then they ran the model, after it they got the results and saw the result. As they had already convinced everybody about the methodology they couldn't change the results...

This ranking is making me want to apply to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Apparently it's better than HBS?

Personally this ranking isnt worth the paper it is printed on. It doesnt reflect the real world at all...seriously stick with US News for getting idea of how schools in the US stack up. BusinessWeek is probably the 2nd best ranking. The rest seem to fail the common sense test. HBS, Stanford, Wharton etc no where near the top?

Ft, is also a somewhat good ranking...

I believe though that "international" schools will gain some ground (actually I think they've been gaining) in world rankings.

I second river in terms that this ranking is not that relevant as we can see VERY BIG DISTORTIONS. Anyway, anyone who knows a little bit about stats knows that past data are just to show past results... No one can tell you about future...

IMD #1 and IESE #2 ?

I feel that this is one of the rankings where schools such as Wharton and Harvard refuse to participate :)

IESE, IE, Cambridge, Leuven-whatever (never heard of this one) and "York University" are above INSEAD? And Cambridge is above LBS? What a joke.

Alright, maybe they have a superior methodology. But where the hell is the reality check?

Whilst I take issue with the some aspects of the methodology (eg. a criteria that is based on the volume of recruiters but not the quality of recruiters is a major oversight in my view) we should all be very careful about dismissing something simply because it does not conform to our expected view.

As an example, let's go back to the 1970s and 80s. At the time, Ford, Chrysler, etc were considered the premium cars. They had brand value and customer recognition. However, Toyota was actually just as technically advanced and was cheaper also. Today, that is not in doubt - if I ranked Toyota as a car company above Ford, no one would argue with me. But imagine if I suggested back in the 70s and 80s that Toyota was above Ford (and it was) - I'd be called a fool! The point is that people naturally find it hard to change certain long-held views.

I'm not saying the Economist ranking is perfect, but I would find it hard to argue that it is useless. They've taken an approach of "OK, I'm going to do an unbiased survey and ranking and not be prejudiced by brand name whatsoever". This is a great approach to take, and one that can uncover widely-held misconceptions if applied properly.

That's why I applied there and am currently a HKUST student :shock:

Not really. I don't really take too much notice of rankings..

If you agree with the methodology, then you rankings are right for you. An interesting fact is that the rankings do affect the number of applications a school gets. I was told that there was more than 1000 applications from Beijing alone to our school this year, most probably due to the higher rankings in FT and Economist last year.

One thing for sure, it will have an affect on the future of HKUST as some people will perceive the school to be of higher calibre, which in turn attracts more applications from higher calibre candidates. The definite plus for us is the location in Hong Kong, on the doorstep of Asia, where there is no recession, still growth, as such, campus recruitment has been active as ever, a lot of big companies have already come in to say they are still recruiting in Asia.

However, the biggest drawback for non-linguists is that they usually require knowledge or capability in an Asian language.

That is in fact: "If you agree with the methodology and if the data is right, then you rankings are right for you."

There are indeed too many weird points in this ranking data for me to give it credibility.

And that's a shame, cause valid or not, rankings of this sort will have impact on perceived brand, and therefore on application volumes...

To me, the strength of a business school is mostly its reputation among recruiters. If my target group of employers are not hiring from school X, then no amount of clever methodology can convince me to apply there. End of story.

remember to also look at historical TRENDS. Check out the great thread that kwam posted before (It's in the knowledge vault, I don't have time to go pull it out). You can really tell how good a school is and what is their current trend by looking at the past 10-15 years of US News and BW.

BW is a bit weird though, putting Stanford 6th... :shock:
