Hi,
I have the GMAT OG for 2017. I plan to write the GMAT in Mar-Apr 2018. Is the 2017 OG sufficient for my preparation? Should I procure the 2018 OG? I also have the Manhattan 5th edition PDF versions.

Kindly advise.

Really depends on if you are able to hit your target accuracy or you need additional practice.
If later, go for much older versions say OG12 then you will have close to 50% of different questions.
Dont't wanna spend a penny? carcass has put in incredible efforts in combining OG compilation here

Along with OG, you should definitely consider the GMATPrep compilations that are available on this forum itself (though I don't have the link right now, but you can do a search).

This will give you a very good additional practice.

Hi sohinide, while there are a few people who have survived just on OG, GMAT Prep and MGMAT guides, most people need other sources. What is your target score? If you aim for high Quant score, do follow Bunuel and think about solving GMATCLUB tests. They have the hardest and some of the best questions. You can certainly pass the verbal by just hanging out on GMATClub. If you wish, you may choose a course provider like TTP for Quant or E-GMAT for verbal. I used MGMAT and personally was not very happy with it. I liked E-GMAT a lot better and TTP for quant. I think EmpowerGMAT is great too. In fact, it may be the best given that you just pay $85 bucks a month and it uses traditional and out-of-box strategies.

Hi sohinide,

The Official Guides from the last several years are fairly similar to one another, so if you already have the GMAT2017 then you probably won't need the GMAT2018. That having been said, you will likely need a variety of additional resources besides that one book and the PDFs that you've mentioned. It sounds like you're just starting out. Is that true? Have you done any studying so far?

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

The answer depends on your ability. If your English skill is good, ie you practice reading everyday, you could earn 700+ easily within few weeks with just an OG book. However, if your English skill isn't good, ie you aren't native speaker, you would need many materials to practice. In this case, an OG book isn't enough to earn 700+.

So, my suggestion is that you should try OG 2017. After you practice all questions in that book, take GMATPrep or other reliable CATs to estimate your ability. If your score is low, then you could consider using other materials, ie other OG books.

Hi sohinide,

I would encourage you take one of the two GMAT PREP practice test. You can know your weaknesses and work on them. If you are willing to study dedicatedly for that period. you are sure to achieve your goal. I believe you may benefit from taking a GMATPREP course.

Your choice of using MGMAT guides and OG for your preparation is great. MGMAT guides are phenomenal and cover the entire syllabus really well. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in quant; a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them.

Also for verbal, I would highly encourage you to consider e-gmat verbal online or the e-gmat verbal live course. They are both amazing courses especially designed for non-natives. They offer almost 25% of their courses for free so you can try out their free trial to decide which one you want to go for. Plus the e-gmat Scholaranium which is included in both the courses is one of the best verbal practice tools in the market.

Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Further another advantage of taking many mocks is to build up your stamina. Apart from the GMATPREP tests, taking practise tests of any major GMATPREP company ought to do that.

I would also encourage you to purchase the verbal and Quant review and GMATPREP QP 1 for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.
