Adopting an official code of ethics regarding business practices may in the long run do our company more harm than good in the public eye. When one of our competitors received unfavorable publicity for violating its own code of ethics, it got more attention from the media than it would have if it had had no such code. Rather than adopt an official code of ethics, therefore, we should instead conduct a publicity campaign that stresses the importance of protecting the environment and assisting charitable organizations. 1. Few spelling mistakes
2. Couple of grammatical errors in sentences
The author claims that adopting an official code of ethics could be deterimental to the company's public image because if such a code is violated, it can result in a negative image. The assumption is based on the experience of a competitor who violated its own code of ethics. The author further concludes that instead the company should stress the importance of protecting the environment and assisting charitable organizations. The assumptions are logically inconclusive and have no clear evidence. Hence, to make the argument more consistent, the author should address the issues discussed further.
First of all, the author is generalizing a specfic case and assuming that because something happened for the competitor, it will also happen for his company. This is critical fallacy in the reasoning as there is no substantial evidence to prove that code of ethics will be violated in a long run and even if they are violated, it is not necessay that the violation will result in unfavorable publicity. While it is always possible that the codes are broken, but if the company designs processes, systems and checkpoints to make sure that the codes are always followed, this possibility can be minimized to a great extent. Moreover, the code violated by the competitor might be severe in the public eyes. It is not necessary that the company's code of ethics will be that severe in public eyes. Fir this argument to substantiate author should try to answer if there were loopholes in the implementation of code of ethincs for the competitor.
Second, author is assuming that by just publicizing the importance of protecting the environment and assisting charitable organization, can improve the company's credibility in public eyes. While this suggestion could hold true, but it is not necessary that it will have same impact as having an official code of ethics regarding business practices. There is no statisctical or logical reasoning behind this assumption that code of ethics can be equated to company's social responsibility and only if, this reasoning can be validated by survey data, it can be taken at the face value.
As discussed above, the arguments presented are flawed and the author needs to address the issues raised above to make this argument logically acceptable. The author should back his assumption with historical information and reserach done on competitor's fallacy to make this argument logically acceptable.
