With Round-2 of applications closing this month for most top MBA programs, you are likely considering applying to the final round of applications if you are reading this! By now, you’ve read everywhere, including here, that Round-3 is the most competitive round with fewer spots available and more candidates (not to mention deferrals from the previous cycle due to the pandemic that will contribute to the scarcity). With the right strategy, however, you might still stand a chance; here are a few tips to increase your odds:
1. Aim for a GMAT/GRE score above your school of choice’s average
Adcoms typically use this final round to boost their averages in terms of standardized scores and GPA; at this point, you can’t do anything about the latter, so your best hope is to maximize your GMAT/GRE score to increase your odds of admissions. If your scores are not optimal at this stage, you might want to consider holding off until next year…
2. Focus on what makes your profile distinctive
A critical part of a successful Round-3 application is your ability to clearly articulate what you will bring to the program that other applicants don’t bring. This distinctive asset can stem from your professional background but also academic and extra-curriculars. The idea is to convey how you will make your classmates’ experience richer thanks to your knowledge and the skills you have gained in the process.
3. Address why you waited for Round-3
Although this isn’t required in your application, it might be a good idea to address why you decided to wait for Round-3 to submit your application (This may come up during the interview anyway- so, it’s best to be prepared to answer this question). Whatever your reasons are make sure that they are clearly communicated and compelling (did you take additional time to strengthen your application by retesting or taking on additional responsibilities at work? That’s what the committee will be looking for)
4. Make sure your short- and long -term career goals fit your program of choice
This advice applies to all rounds of application, but this is particularly critical when applying to Round-3. You want to demonstrate that you took the time to research the program offerings and that your goals strategically align with what the school has to offer. Identify specific courses, conferences, students’ organizations that are of interest to you and that you are looking forward to participating to. The idea for the AdComs not to get the impression that you applied to this school in Round-3 as an afterthought.
5. Plan ahead and think forward
This is particularly important if you are an international applicant. You want to demonstrate that you are fully aware of the tight deadlines when it comes to compiling your visa paperwork and they you are being pro-active not to miss an essential step in the process. What have you done to make sure you meet critical deadlines and deliverables?
