Hi all,
This forum has been extremely helpful and valuable to me throughout my GMAT and applications process. Its time to give back.
Im male, english is my second language, have an engineering background and 10 years of work experience, most of it in the US.
I bought the KAPLAN AtoZ book, told myself i'd study that and then take the test. After a month of meticulously going through the 800 pages of the book, I took a KAPLAN practice test and could barely finish it in time. The score is pointless to mention.
Thats when i discovered this forum and came up with a different plan. I bought the OG book and Manhattan guides for specific subjects that were a weakness of mine. I practiced all of the OG questions, timed myself for each question and noted why i made errors if i did. I especially struggled with harder CR and SC questions, and none of the books helped much. I used various free apps on my iphone, some of which had previous OG questions, and practiced SC and CR any chance i got. I sucked soo badly at SC that I ended up getting an online tutor and had about 4 sessions. I improved but only marginally.
Once i felt i had a handle on the various question types, a method for answering them correctly in 1.5 to 2 mins, i started taking practice tests. I started with
Manhattan Gmat tests and they kicked my ass ... 640, 650, 640 in 3 attempts. I took a the first GMAT prep test and scored a 650. Quant surprisingly was my weakness. I practiced Quant for a week straight after that, only doing OG questions, timing myself and reviewing my errors. I focused on speed and improving my methods to approach the different question types, and scored a 750 on the GMAT prep 2 test.
I bought test 3 and 4 and scored 750 and 710 respectively. 2 days before the test I took the prep test 1 and scored a 760, and on the official day, scored a 710 (Q49 V38), IR 6, AWA 6.
The test center was cramped and had alot of people moving in and out. They gave us bulky headphones that were uncomfortable and rushing to the restrooms and back during the break didnt help much either.
Once you know the material, its a mental game ... hence not taking a practice test the day before or even reviewing any questions. Thats what works for me, you should do what you think you need to do to get yourself to an optimum mental condition.
My advise is to focus on OG questions, time yourself every time you try a question and jot down why you got things wrong when you review your tests. Its critical to develop a method for answering the different question types, and there are alot of good resources in this forum to help you think through that. My score is not a 750+ but i believe if i took the test again in a month i could get there. My total prep time to get 710 was 3 months.
After reading some more on the forum, I decided i should focus on my applications. Do not underestimate them, they can be double the work you put in for your GMAT if you are applying to top schools.
I hope this helps. If any has any questions for me, feel free to PM me. Good luck to all!
