gagejd: I had a similar problem to yours in the Quant section while preparing (scored well, but timing was off). I would read the following guide:

https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index.php/2011/06/21/everything-you-need-to-know-about-time-management/

Get into the habit of checking the time regularly to see where you stand and adjusting your pace accordingly (either working faster or skipping questions if you're behind). You should never come into the last 3-4 questions off pace, because as observed above, skipping a few questions at the end can seriously hurt your score. I would not take the test again until you can comfortably score where you want to without having to rush the end of sections.

If you have the time, I would revise your Verbal strategy from going with your gut to implementing some rules. Under the stress of the exam, you are more likely to second guess yourself and make avoidable mistakes if you don't have a good system for approaching questions. You also reduce variability in your score if you use a method. For example, I did very well on SC in my first CAT, but I wouldn't have been able to explain why some of the other answer choices were wrong. If I took the test under different circumstances I easily could have gotten many of those questions wrong.

Finally, when you practice, practice under real test conditions. That includes timing your breaks and doing both AWA sections. The good thing is that now you have experience with the test center and that should be less of a factor next time.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help, definitely can use some pointers mentioned in the article! I'll work on getting the fundamentals a bit more then use the +/- to see how I'm doing with each problem!

Did you take the gmat prep the day before your real gmat test? If so, that may be a causal factor and the fact that you skipped awa for your prep test could mean that you didnt' have enough stamina.

Yes, after studying all day I finished it around 1 am. The thing is, I almost felt the awa was just a way to kill time before the quant, didn't stress over it whatsoever. Perhaps it had an effect, though, and I just didn't realize it..

Yeah. I think a lot of people underestimate the stamina portion of the test. I guess you now know what you need to improve more on! Good luck :)
