A little backgroundI am from the highly over represented Indian IT male applicant pool. I have been working with a fortune 50 US semiconductor company for the past 3 years since completing my Bachelor of Engineering from BIT Mesra, India. After 2 unsuccessful attempts at the Indian CAT (Common Admission Test) for securing admissions to the IIMs, my tryst with GMAT began in December 2020.
Motivation behind GMATAfter enjoying the newly found independence at Bengaluru for 1 year, I along with one of my friends started preparing for CAT(Common Admission Test for most Indian B-Schools). We registered for an offline coaching and sat for the exam. I got a decent score, but I wanted to get into better schools, hence I decided for taking another shot at the exam. I switched to a different division in the company and continued my prep. Covid lockdowns happened, I returned home for WFH and this time I was largely doing self preparation, I only took a crash course in the last 2 months to get into the rigorous practice mode before the real exam. Though I managed to secure a decent enough 99 percentile in QA in the real test, the DILR section(equivalent to IR), pulled my score down. This was a huge shock from my mock exam scores.
Even though I excelled at my job, got a few awards, I was so determined to crack the CAT in 2020 that when I realized the estimated score to be not enough for my target schools, I decided against applying to any of the B-Schools whatsoever. The ensuing 1 month was pretty sad and gloomy. It felt like I had given it all and still failed. It was during this time that my parents pushed me to try for the GMAT. Till then, for me GMAT had a big halo around itself, something that only the rich people or people with stellar careers could afford. While preparing for CAT, GMAT was something I had never imagined in even my wildest dreams. I shrugged off my parents' advice of appearing for GMAT as too unrealistic (silly me

). My father showed me some GMAT stories from around the web. That piqued my interest. I was like, Man this is possible if I can put some efforts !!
I started researching about GMAT. Voila! GMAT CLUB!

That's when this treasure trove presented itself to me. I felt maybe not getting through the IIMs could be a blessing in disguise. I got to know about so many schools, each with unique program characteristics (The stupid earlier me knew only 3 schools for GMAT

Harvard, Stanford and ISB). I joined the forum in December. Since it was the R2 timeline, the forums used to be very active with frequent profile eval posts, decision trackers all around. That hustle and bustle was enough to get me hooked!!
First leg of preparationThis was the first spurt of motivation, and I was ascending the Bell Curve at a fast pace.
Scrounging through the various forums, reading many debriefs, I was certain that Verbal is the section that can make or break a score. I decided to start with SC (I would not recommend this, I feel CR to be a better starting point, in order to build the mental acuity).
I got hold of the Manhattan guides and started with the SC guide. The book is so well structured that I enjoyed going through it. I got genuinely interested in the nuances of the language, instead of simply reading something to crack an exam. I was a bit slow (Remember the Bell Curve ? It started to approach the plateau). I kept going through the Manhattan SC guide and the awesome
GMATNinja Youtube Series (you are seriously missing a vital part of the preparation, if you have not gone through these videos), through January end.
InactivityCovid relaxed a little bit (calm before the storm of second Covid wave), and I was asked to come to office for a new project starting from February (The good 'ol Bell Curve never disappoints

, having reached the top of the curve, now was the time for the descent).
Stayed in Bengaluru for 3 months (Feb-April). Got busy with work, and GMAT took a backseat. Occasionally used to go through some questions or posts. Weekends were the only time for prep (still limited to SC , BIG MISTAKE !!! Never concentrate on a single section alone). Got sick in between

, lucky that it was just a severe case of cold and not covid. By this time, prep stagnated and I was forgetting stuff (Understood why
bb always recommends to get over with GMAT within a few months)
Gathering the motivation againI started talking to a few B-School alums over Linkedin. I spoke to quite a few people in ISB. The discussions were helpful to refocus my attention again. Got to know, GRE was also a way to go to BSchool, but by this time I was invested into GMAT well enough that I did not want to pivot to GRE right away. I was recommended to try
Magoosh , but I had fixed my mind to give the first attempt with self preparation alone. In the mean time I had a conversation with an Anderson candidate and it was an eye opener for me. I had an hour long call with him. It was a very candid feedback about my profile till then. I got a good glimpse of the entire application journey and a reality check. He gave me a good action plan and probed me to delve deeper and understand why to pursue a particular career track and does it really interest me. I got to know of the various career opportunities and he also walked me through his prep strategy and application journey. It was my time for introspection. Most people do it while filing the applications, but I found this to be a real gamechanger,. I invested quite a lot of time researching through multiple websites, linkedin profiles etc. I was doing all this for a month and the prep became secondary. However, by the end of the month, I was pretty sure that MBA is the right option for my career progress, and I was not simply getting attracted by the glitz and glamour. Towards the later stages of my prep , I read a post from
MartyTargetTestPrep how GMAT was a mental game. I think this introspection early on, helped me to get into a correct mindset.
Study mode onSecond Covid wave was ravaging all around India. I returned back home in May. As mentioned, I spent the month trying to find my drive for doing the MBA and getting into the mindset for slaying the GMAT beast. I restructured my prep and created an action plan for appearing for the exam by mid September. It was supposed to be a 3.5 month dash from June.
I got hold of the PowerScore CR Bible. One diligent read through the text was good enough to understand the major aspects and types of GMAT CR questions. Started solving the forum CR questions with the timer. This helped a lot. Going through the multiple explanations across the forum helped to widen the horizon and understand how to approach a question from different angles. I made a noob mistake which I am sure many people do, right after getting a few 600 level questions I jumped into the 700 ones. I was not able to solve them properly because my basics were not yet at the right levels.
I came across a Youtube video which stated that key to getting 700 were the 600 level questions. If you are not able to knock the 600s out of the park, there was no chance you would even get to see the 700 levels. So, I started focusing solely on 600-700 level questions on the forum. I stopped with SC and now I was only solving LSAT CR and RC 600-700 level questions. Since the LSAT questions are tougher and require a more intricate understanding of the arguments, I felt these questions were good to hone the basics and prepare the weapons needed to slay the GMAT beast.
broall CR LSAT question bank and
Sajjad1994 RC questions were very helpful.
nightblade354 's RC and CR guides resonated with me very well, I would highly recommend them alongwith the 4 part RC Youtube videos by
GMATNinja .Just as a note, I did not practice much of the 700 level LSAT questions, they seemed harder for me. After grabbing a good grip on the 600 ones, I switched over to solving the GMAT stuff.
The LSAT phase lasted for a month almost. By mid-July, I felt quite comfortable with CR and started preparing RC mostly. Taking notes for each para helped me greatly. As explained by Charles, I was always trying to build connections between the paragraphs. Thinking why has the author written this? what is point of the contrast? Is this a general statement or only the author's POV? These kind of connections were very helpful. I also discovered that taking notes helped me remember stuff better (maybe I am a kinesthetic learner). I was maintaining written notes and writing out questions that troubled me. I doubled down on the written
error log kind of a thing, it helped me greatly. It might not work for most people, many find it useful to maintain an excel
error log. I maintained a notebook with old school way of circling, underlining, different inks etc.
I used to practice some quant questions in between the verbal questions, and I was doing fairly well. So, I kept quant preparation for the later stages. Finally, it was August, 1.5 month left for my anticipated test date. I started quants by going through forum questions and the GMAT math book. I felt my quants were strong enough from my earlier CAT preparation. DS questions seemed a bit challenging, but I could get the hang of it after going through a few questions. ( Very important thing to remember, NO is also a valid answer in DS questions ). August went by with mostly RC and QA.
Last sprint for the examI tried to book a test center exam for September 14th, payment failed. Next day when I tried to book, there were no more slots in September. I booked the first available slot on October 1st.
Last 1 month I had kept for OG practice and mocks. In the earlier stages I was mostly preparing from reputed sources such as Veritas,
Magoosh, manhattan and LSAT. But last one month, I did not touch anything unofficial except the 3 unofficial mocks. I spent the last 1 month doing only OG and Verbal Review questions to keep momentum. Maybe, the excess focus on verbal hurt my QA to some extent

I got to thank
bb for the Premium Bundle which helped me to get Veritas Mocks for free

Following are my mock scores
Mock V Q Total Date
Prep1 39 50 730 26 Aug
SigmaX 42 49 750 29 Aug
Veritas1 37 50 710 4 Sept
Veritas2 41 50 740 11 Sept
Prep2 44 51 770 19 Sept
Exam DayMy test center exam got cancelled and I had to reschedule again to a different center. However, the test center experience was very smooth, The staff were very helpful.
During the exam, I got stuck in a few CR questions which ate up some time, but thankfully, I got an RC based on a known topic, which helped me to compensate for the lost time. Keeping the nerves steady was important, as otherwise it was very easy to get into the panic mode.
I still don't understand what went wrong in the QA section

Being an Indian applicant I was aiming for a 740, got stuck at 720

I am thinking of taking another shot again by amping up the QA part. Experts, can you please help me to decide if 720 is a good enough score? From the various profiles I have seen, 720 seems to be a bit on the line kind of a score. I am aiming for US schools for continuing in the Tech field.
I am still researching about the European schools, but not quite convinced about the tech roles offered there. Any help would be appreciated. I plan to apply for the next year admission cycle.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
bb for this awesome platform. I wish many of the other founder/CXO's all around, were as responsive and passionate as you . Lots of kudos to you.
