Hi everybody. A little bit of background first:
Background: 28, Male, international (non-China, East Asian).
Academics: top law school in the country (3.6 GPA) and LLM at a top law school in the UK (non-Oxbridge) so TOEFL is not necessary.
GMAT: 740 (Q47 V45)
WE: Transactional lawyer at a boutique firm in the country. Several high-profile cases/clients like Uber, Aramco etc. Overall 3.5-4 years of WE as of right now.
EC: Volunteer at the LGBTQ+ youth centre in our capital city.
Recs: Haven't asked but most likely one partner at my firm with whom I've worked on most cases + vice head of the LGBTQ+ youth centre.
Goals: Consulting in the US (ideally MBB). Particularly interested in macroeconomics and antitrust (the latter being my primary field of work).
Target schools: Kellogg, Yale SOM, Stern.
Diversity: Queer and first generation college student (already signed up for the ROMBA fellowship)
I plan to apply soon (first round this year). Took 4 mocks (640, 770, 720, 770; the last 770 shouldn't count though as there were many repeat questions iirc).
My questions are:
- Should I retake and aim for 760+? I did awful with Q during this 740 attempt. It always takes me longer to do math (I compulsively verify everything) and I didn't even finish the Q section (missed the final one or two questions as the time ran out). In my first two attempts (roughly 6 months before the 740 attempt in which I scored 700 and 720, respectively), my Q was 49 and in my mocks my Q was always 50. If I hadn't panicked and scored Q49 in tandem with V45, I think my score would've been 760. However according to the local consultant whom I've already hired, 740 and 760 don't really make any difference, and retaking GMAT is exhausting. But according to the research I've done, 760 or 770 could drastically boost my chances especially with scholarships, which I really need to receive as I'm not doing this without some financial aid even if I get accepted by my dream schools.
- Another question I have is how many schools should I apply to. So far I'm planning 3 with the consultant, but I'm contemplating applying to 3 or 4 more (namely Booth, CBS, Tuck and/or Ross), but I'm not comfortable with asking my recommenders to help with so many schools.
Many thanks for your input!
