15 l mixture has = $$\frac{20}{100}*15$$ = 3 l alcohol
Therefore, 15 l mixture has = 15-3 = 12 l water

Now 3 l of water added, new mixture contains = 3 l alcohol and (12+3) = 15 l water
Therefore, percentage of alcohol = $$\frac{3}{(3+15)}*100%$$
$$= 16 \frac{2}{3} %$$ alcohol

A. 17%
B. 16 2/3%
C. 15 2/3%
D. 15%
E. 12%

Solution:

• The amount of alcohol in the solution = $$\frac{20}{100}*15= 3$$ liter.
o The amount of water in solution = $$15 – 3 = 12$$ liter
• The amount of water added = 3 liter
o Total amount of water in solution = $$12+3 = 15$$ liter
o The amount of alcohol in solution = 3 liter
 Total of solution = $$15 + 3 = 18$$ liter
• Required percentage = $$\frac{3}{18} *100$$ = $$16 \frac{2}{3}$$ %
Hence, the correct answer is Option B.

Alchohol in 15 lt mixture = 20% of 15 = 3 lt
Water in 15 lt mixture = 80% of 15 = 12 lt

Water = 12+3 = 15 lt
Total Quantity of mixture = 15+3 = 18

% of alcohol = (3/18)*100 = 16.67%
