Let no of cupcakes purchased be \(c\) and no of brownies purchased be \(b\)
As per the question
\(5c + 4b =34\) --------------(1) &
\(c + b = 8\) ------------------(2)
Solving equation 1 & 2 we get
\(b = 6\)

We even do not have to solve equation here if we do not want to).
I prefer to solve equtions usually, but in this cas used a different approach.
n - number of cupcakes.
k - number of brownies.
So 5n+4k=34 -------> n must be even.
n+k=8

0 not integer
2 6
4 not integer
6 1
8 not positive
So it is only 2 and 6. So option E.
