A certain cathedral bell marks every hour by ringing a number of times equal to the current hour ( for example, at 2:00PM, the bell rings twice). Each toll of the bell lasts for three seconds, with 2 seconds of silence between tolls. At 9:00AM, how many seconds elapse between the beginning of the first toll and the end of the last toll?

a) 52
b) 48
c) 45
d) 43
e) 40

Please assist with above problem.

9:00AM means there will be 9 tolls
Since each interval is of 3 seconds , the tolls will take 27 seconds

Further , interval between tools is 2 seconds and it will look something like this -

Toll==2sec==Toll==2sec==Toll==2sec==........Toll

Check there will be 8 gaps / intervals for 9AM...

So, the total intervals will be 8*2 = 16 seconds..

SO, the total time taken will be 27 + 16 = 43

Hence answer will be (D) 43 seconds...

There will be 9 tolls and (9-1) = 8 wait periods between tolls.

So total time = 9*3 + 8*2 = 27 + 16 = 43 secs
