p1 : Discovery of a chemical compound which disrupts later reproduction cycles of certain sea creatures
p2 : Compound spreads downwards and active at 20 feet .

Conclusion : It will not be sucessfull because .. prethinking say jelly fish stay lower than 20 feet .

A) such an invention will most likely be implemented by groups looking to reinstate balance in ecosystems that have been damaged : not relevant
B) the vertical order of a mixture of different liquids is determined by the relative density of each individual liquid : Not relevant
C) the planula, a pre-embryonic creature spawned from a jellyfish pair, may swim freely in the ocean for several days before reaching its destination on the sea bottom : talks about pre embryonic stage chemical effect later stages of reproduction out of choice
D) shortly after fertilization, jellyfish larvae become plant-like polyps, which rooted to the sea floor, facilitate budding, and the final release of offspring --- Hold it !! Weakens it since it may be the case since the jelly fish are way below the floor bed and chemical is active at 20 feet
E) jellyfish are either male or female, and through the release of sperm and eggs into the open water, perform fertilisation : Not relevant

The question says that the chemical reaches to depth of 20 feet, but still unable to control jellyfish. Why?

What if the jellyfish develop at the level that is between ground and 19.9 feet above the ground. Keeping this in mind, I looked at the solution.

A) such an invention will most likely be implemented by groups looking to reinstate balance in ecosystems that have been damaged. How does it matter to us?
B) the vertical order of a mixture of different liquids is determined by the relative density of each individual liquid. How does it matter to us?
C) the planula, a pre-embryonic creature spawned from a jellyfish pair, may swim freely in the ocean for several days before reaching its destination on the sea bottom. We don't know the depth at which they swim and if the chemical reaches to them or not.
D) shortly after fertilization, jellyfish larvae become plant-like polyps, which rooted to the sea floor, facilitate budding, and the final release of offspring. So the embryo development happen at the sea level where chemical does'nt reach. And, hence it would not be able to control jelly fishes.
E) jellyfish are either male or female, and through the release of sperm and eggs into the open water, perform fertilisation. we are not concerned about fertilization process.

Although D is the best among all, I have to assume that depth of sea is more than 20 feet. Although it's common sense that depth would be greater than that but I believe that it should be mentioned in the premise itself somehow.

OMG, how a real gmat question is so ambiguous and unclear, look at the conclusion, "although this although this will clearly be unsuccessful since...." => since modifies words next to it only???

I did not understand the answer D
In option D what phase of fertilization is D talking about .If it is in later stage then embryos are going to die .
If its in the early phase , embryos will survive.
Experts Any thoughts on this ?

When this question asks what answer choice most logically completes the passage, it is really asking what answer choice supports the fact that the chemical compound will NOT kill jellyfish. Question D simply detracts from the efficacy of the plan by showing that many infant jellyfish would be unharmed by the chemical as the chemical only penetrates 20 feet deep into the sea.

I am confused. So the chemical is active till only 20 feet. How do we know that the water is not shallow and the sea floor is is less than 20 feet? There is no mention of the depth of the sea floor.
