A customer purchased 6 shirts priced at $10.99 each, excluding sales tax. How much sales tax did he pay on this purchase?

(1) The customer paid a 5 percent sales tax on the total price of the shirts.
(2) The customer paid a total of $11.54 for each shirt, including sales tax.

Hi GMATNinja KarishmaB

For statement 2, how can we assume that sales tax is the only tax considered for the total price? If this is the case then statement 2 shouldn't be sufficient alone to answer the question because we don't how much are the other taxes like x, y, z, etc. Please let me know where I thought wrong here. I had selected Option (A) due to this thinking.

From the wording of the question, we can figure that only sales tax is in play.

6 shirts priced at $10.99 each, excluding sales tax
$11.54 for each shirt, including sales tax

In a generic economic model, one would normally have pre tax cost and with tax cost and that tax would be sales tax at the consumer level. Hence I don't find any ambiguity in this question.
Though rest assured that if, in the experimental stage, they find that it does cause ambiguity, they would not make it live.
