GH -08.14.13

Let x be the cost of hand towel and y be the cost of Bath towel

Statement 1 :

6x = 84, x = 14. But we don't the know the value of y. Insufficient

Statement 2

x+y = 32. 2 variables and 1 eqn. Cannot find x & y from this. Insufficient

Combining Statement 1 & 2

We know x = 14, from statement 2,

x+y = 32, 14+y = 32
y = 18

6x + 11y = 6(14) + 11(18) = 84 + 198 = 282

Option C

Hope it helped

Cheers

Official Explanation

Answer: C

Statement (1) is insufficient. We can divide $84 by $6 to get the number of hand towels, but we're looking for the overall cost of the two types of towels. Without information about bath towels, we can't find that.

Statement (2) is also insufficient. We know the total number of towels, but until we know how many of each were purchased, we can't translate that into a total cost.

Taken together, the statements are sufficient. Statement (1) tells us how many hand towels were purchased; when coupled with (2), we can determine how many bath towels were purchased. Since we know how must each bath towel cost, we could calculate the total cost of the towels. Choice (C) is correct.
