A low-calorie, low-fat, high-protein diet has been shown to assist in increasing longevity. The average life expectancy among the Jani community in Ambatia is significantly higher than it is among any other community in the country. The Jani community is located in a remote, secluded area, and its only contact with the outside world is a monthly delivery of groceries from the nearest town unless the weather is too bad for the journey. Members of the community grow most of their food, as well as goats and chickens, which they occasionally eat. This essentially imposes a low-calorie, low-fat, high protein diet. Clearly, these circumstances account for the longer lives of the Jani community members.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the above conclusion?

A) Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement.
B) The Jani community has less than a thousand members.
C) In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.
D) The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.
E) The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community.

Hello prue262

B is wrong because the size of the community does not have an influence on the conclusion.

Premise: People in Ambatia live very log lives [because - conclusion] they a low-calorie, low-fat, high protein diet.

We need to weak this conclusion so we should find the answer in which we will have other reasons for the long life of members of the community.
The answer A says that many people joined the community in their old ages so we have a selective bias here. The main reason of long life possible not depends on the diet but exists because old people choose this place for a living.

We can make an analogy with a retirement home.

A retirement home have very high longevity because this house propose only vegetarian menu for its habitants. This is a wrong conclusion because longevity in this place induced by specific of this place and not by a vegetarian menu.

A) Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement. (Weakener since we cannot say they developed their heath developed since they received such diet or grown in that area.)
B) The Jani community has less than a thousand members.(OFS)
C) In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.(Only medical expenses are covered and even if personal income does not affect the health quality, this ells us nothing about their longer life reason.)
D) The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.(Strengthener.Opposite)
E) The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community. OFS since we have no info regarding country X
