A low-calorie, low-fat, high-protein diet has been shown to assist in increasing longevity. The average life expectancy among the Jani community in Ambatia is significantly higher than it is among any other community in the country. The Jani community is located in a remote, secluded area, and its only contact with the outside world is a monthly delivery of groceries from the nearest town unless the weather is too bad for the journey. Members of the community grow most of their food, as well as goats and chickens, which they occasionally eat. This essentially imposes a low-calorie, low-fat, high protein diet. Clearly, these circumstances account for the longer lives of the Jani community members.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the above conclusion?

A) Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement.

B) The Jani community has less than a thousand members.

C) In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.

D) The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.

E) The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community.

Hello prue262

B is wrong because the size of the community does not have an influence on the conclusion.

Premise: People in Ambatia live very log lives [because - conclusion] they a low-calorie, low-fat, high protein diet.

We need to weak this conclusion so we should find the answer in which we will have other reasons for the long life of members of the community.
The answer A says that many people joined the community in their old ages so we have a selective bias here. The main reason of long life possible not depends on the diet but exists because old people choose this place for a living.

We can make an analogy with a retirement home.

A retirement home have very high longevity because this house propose only vegetarian menu for its habitants. This is a wrong conclusion because longevity in this place induced by specific of this place and not by a vegetarian menu.

A) Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement. (Weakener since we cannot say they developed their heath developed since they received such diet or grown in that area.)
B) The Jani community has less than a thousand members.(OFS)
C) In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.(Only medical expenses are covered and even if personal income does not affect the health quality, this ells us nothing about their longer life reason.)
D) The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.(Strengthener.Opposite)
E) The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community. OFS since we have no info regarding country X

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the above conclusion?

A. Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement.
Looks good...If people have stayed out for 40years and still have high life-expectancy then the environment in which Jani community is staying may not be the reason. So that means logic of they staying secluded is not true after all.
So the reason could be genetic or something else.

B. The Jani community has less than a thousand members.
The question is not how many are there but the question is why they as a community have the max life-expectancy..... INCORRECT

C. In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.
Again the point is not about health care but the seclusion that is being attributed to life expectancy.... INCORRECT

D. The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.

E. The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community.
The point is of average and not one person.... INCORRECT

A

Clearly, these circumstances account for the longer lives of the Jani community members.

Conclusion :- The circumstances described above account for the longer lives of the Jani community members.

Weakening Approach :-
We have to find the answer for question :- Why circumstances described above do not account for the longer lives of the Jani community members?

A. Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement.
Seems to be valid choice. If people have stayed out for 40 years and still have high life-expectancy then the environment in which Jani community is not the only reason.
This choice is alternate reason for the cause.

B. The Jani community has less than a thousand members.
The question is not about number of people in the community. but the question is why they as a community have longer lives. INCORRECT

C. In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.
This choice talks about health care and doesn't help us answer our question. INCORRECT

D. The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.
This choice presents some fact. And it doesn't help us answer our question. INCORRECT

E. The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community.
This choice presents another fact. And it doesn't help us answer our question. INCORRECT

Ans - A.

Please let me know if my reasoning is correct.

Conclusion: Longer lives of the Jani community members is because of a low-calorie, low-fat, high-protein diet.

Assumption: No other factors contribute to longer lives in Jani community.

To prove: Other factors are there. This weakens the conclusion.

A. Many people who live in the Jani community joined it after the age of 40 or after retirement.
This shows that there are people who joined after 40 years or after retirement and still have a long life.
This essentially proves that other factors are involved.

B. The Jani community has less than a thousand members.
It is totally out of focus.

C. In Ambatia, all medical expenses are paid for by the government, so that personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives.
Irrelevant.

D. The life expectancy in Ambatai is 76 years, compared to 84 years in the Jani community.
This gives extra details. But doesn't weaken. In fact, this is opposite to what we are set out to prove.

E. The oldest person in Country X is 97 years old, and she is not a member of the Jani community.
Out of focus.

My logic for eliminating C was that "personal income does not affect the quality of health care a person receives". But we don't know whether that quality of healthcare is good or bad. So we can't really say that healthcare is responsible for longevity of people in Jani community. Is my logic correct?? Pls advise

To some extent I can say yes your reasoning is correct. If it were given that the quality of healthcare provided was good, this option would have been a correct answer as it would have given us the alternate reason.

Since we do not know the quality of the health care a person receives(good or bad), this option can be eliminated.
