OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

A nutritional research company published an article describing the health benefits of red wine. The article led to a substantial increase in sales of the beverage. The Carducci vineyard is one that specializes in such wine, following a family tradition of over 400 years. Every year it releases a new wine. The Carducci sales figures for the year after the article was published were very low although the wine gained popularity amongst gourmet chefs.

Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

A. Wine made by the Carducci vineyard is not officially considered red wine.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference question, so it is made up of premises; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises. Here they are:

Premise A: A nutritional research company published an article describing the health benefits of red wine.
    +
Premise B: Because of the article, red wine sales rose.
    +
Premise C: The Carducci vineyard makes red wine. It has been doing so for more than 400 years.
    +
Premise D: Every year the Carducci vineyard releases a new product - a new wine.
    +
Premise E: Not many people bought the wine sold the year after the article was published. A number of chefs, however, did like it.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

This conclusion contradicts what we are told in Premise C.

B. Very low red wine sales figures cannot be greatly affected by a gained popularity amongst gourmet chefs.

This conclusion is clearly supported by Premise E.

C. The Carducci wine released the year after the article was published was of a lower quality than its usual standard.

Incorrect.

    =
    Conclusion: ?

This conclusion goes too far beyond the premises. The argument does not mention anything about the previous or current quality of the Carducci wine.

D. The article referred to Carducci wine in a negative light.

Incorrect.

This conclusion goes too far from the premises. The argument does not mention anything about the article referring to Carducci at all.

E. Medical publications can eliminate entire industries overnight if they are not carefully phrased.

Incorrect.

While the conclusion in this answer choice may be true, it is not supported by the premises. The article mentioned in the argument presented red wine in a positive light, and so could not have served to eliminate the industry.
