My doubt is, it is nowhere mentioned that it is a rectangle, and we are also told to not trust diagrams unless explicitly stated. How can we assume here that the shape is rectangle?

I got the same answer as mentioned in the question, even though I had the same doubt in mind.

Since neither the width of the path not the perimeter of the lawn would be affected by the shape of the lawn, I assumed that the lawn was square. this made the calculations easier.

Since the perimeter of the lawn is 32, the length of each side of the lawn is 8.

Then the area of the lawn = 64
Since the area of the path = 132
therefore, the total are of the lawn and path = 196 i.e 14^2

Width of the path = (side of the lawn and path - side of the lawn)/2 = (14-8)/2 = 6/2 = 3
