This is a very tough subtle between B and D. This is just an opinion and I might be wrong. I marked B myself, but upon analyzing the OA, I realized that one (choice B) says "regard as popular" and the other (Choice D) says "goal of achieving popularity." I think this makes B incorrect.

The only reason I did not pick is because of the term 'students' is replaced by 'children'. I thought that this makes option D deviate from the discussion. Is this general approach of mine wrong?
Thanks in advance!

this is a nice question

there should be a link from "goal" of being popular and impressing teachers and not being popular + impressing teachers.

My answer choice was B.

Statement B shows that -middle school students do not regard as popular anyone who strives to impress a teacher. But in the argument it says " main goal of most middle school students is to be viewed as popular by their classmates". Assumption cannot be contradictory to premises.
bhavinshah5685
A recent study by psychologists found that the main goal of most middle school students is to be viewed as popular by their classmates. The psychologists also found that the students who seek to be popular will only take as friends other students who share the goal of achieving popularity. Therefore, the psychologists argued, any middle school students who strive to impress their teachers will not make friends with most of their classmates.

The argument put forth by the psychologists assumes that

A. achieving popularity is often not done by a single individual, but rather by a group of children.
B. middle school students do not regard as popular anyone who strives to impress a teacher.
C. a student can impress a teacher by not fraternizing with the popular crowd of students.
D. most middle school children believe that those who strive to impress a teacher do not have the goal of achieving popularity.
E. middle school students are known to be particularly cruel to classmates that are considered different from the norm.

argument- main goal of middle school of students is to be viewed as popular by their classmate.
they also make friends with other who has the same goal of being popular.
conclusion- any students that strive to impress teachers wont make friends with most of their mates.

main goal- to be popular- make friends with- students shared the same goal- anyone try to impress teachers- wont make friends with most of mates.

here impressing teacher is not aligning with being popular.

A how many students need to achieve popularity is not concern
B being regarded a popular is not same as having goal of being popular.
C irrelevant
D if this is the case then it bridges the missing link. if we negate this then it breaks the conclusion. perfect ans
E complete irrelevant to passage.
