Your stats and experience all appear to be strong. Are you located in the US? Did you attend college in the US or somewhere else? Strength of undergraduate institution can be tough to gauge for non-US schools.

Hi,

I've done all my studies in Thailand and worked in Thailand as well. Would these undermine my chances?

Thanks

No, I don't think that necessarily undermines your chances. I was just curious because if it was an easily comparable US school it might be easier to gauge your chances. I'm not sure how many MBA applicants there are from Thailand, but I'm guessing not many; this would definitely be an advantage for you.

Hi All,

I have a similar request to the topic, and so I didn't want to start a new thread.

I just gave my GMAT a few days back and I am looking to apply in R2.
Here's a brief of my profile.
GMAT - 750 (Q 50, V 41, IR 8, AWA -4.5)
GPA - 6.2/10 ( Graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. It was a dual degree in Electrical Engg, which is Masters and Bachelors together. I think this GPA would translate to about 2.4 or 2.5 on 4 scale)
Work ex: Total of 4 years. 2 years in Research and Consulting, clients were Global and Fortune 500. Promoted from an Analyst to a Lead role in a year, where I managed a team of 5 analysts and led projects. I then moved into a different role, 2 years as a Software Engg working in a US based MNC)
Extra Currics: Nothing major, was a member of the institute football team and hostel team. Won a few medals. Have been participating in some community service activities as part of our company's CSR projects.

Do you guys think I should even bother about applying to the top 10 univs?
I am counting out HBS, Stan, Booth, Kellogg, Wharton, etc. I know Duke and Ross are also top 10, but do I atleast have an outside chance of getting into these schools.

The schools I have shortlisted for my apps so far are:
Duke, Ross, Tepper, Darden, UCLA, Cornell, Stern, Tuck and McCombs. I plan to apply to about 5-7 of these.

Please let me know your honest opinions. I would really appreciate it :)

Thanks!

Dear all,

First of all, I would like to thank you all in advance. I am planning to apply for MBA on Aug 2015 intake.
What are my chances at top 5 schools?

My Profile:
+ Thai Nationality - Age 24
+ GMAT 760 IR 8 AWA 5.5 on my first attempt
+ CFA level 3 candidate
+ Studied Computer Engineering at top local school (rank 3rd in class, GPA 3.9/4.0)
+ Studied Finance at open university (my 2nd bachelor degree, rank 1st in class, GPA 3.7/4.0)

Work Experience:
+Investment Banking Analyst at Regional House since May 2012 focusing on equity fund raising
- done many deals on agricultural and renewable energy industries
+ Six internships during college life (political party, consulting, finance, equity research, IT in Bangalore)

Post-MBA goal
+ getting into private equity

Target Schools
+ Top 5 US

Thank you so much
BR,

You have a very good GMAT score and GPA. By the time you join a business school, you'll have a moderate work experience of 3 years. Most of the selected candidates have an average of 5 years of work experience. Having said that, top schools are focusing on younger applicants as well. If you can get a solid work experience (including promotions and awards), that might suffice. Quality of work experience matters more than the quantity. You have not mentioned anything about your extra curricular activities and leadership experience, which are given considerable weightage by the schools. If you wish to apply for 2015 intake, the most important thing for you will be solid essays and recommendations.

Good Luck!

Your GPA would be a certain drawback but it can be compensated with your high GMAT Score. A good gmat score would generally cover the sins of low GPA. It shows you can withstand the academic rigor at the business school. IIT is a recognized brand at US schools. You have a good work experience but you lack in the extra curricular department. Have you delivered good results in your leadership role? Results matter more than the size of the teams.. If you plan to get selected in R2, you need to work on your application. You fall in the most competitive segment (Indian IT Male ). Your target colleges are reasonable. You just need solid essays. Focus all your energies on your application. Speak to few alumni of your target colleges.
