A restaurant has a total of 16 tables, each of which can seat a maximum of 4 people. If 50 people were sitting at the tables in the restaurant, with no tables empty, what is the greatest possible number of tables that could be occupied by just 1 person?
A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6
Let's take care of the constraint first - "No tables should be empty"
To meet the constraint, we can place one person in each table. Hence, 16 people have been seated, and there are 34 people remaining to be seated. Now each table can at max seat 3 more people, hence to maximize the number of single occupied seats, we've to maximize the number of tables which has 4 people seated. We can place 33 people in 11 tables (3 * 11).
The remaining one person can be placed on the 12th table.
Therefore from 13th to 16th table, there is only one person seated.
Number of tables = 16-13+1 = 4
