A survey of High school students found that 1/2 of the female students searched the internet and 2/3 of the male students searched the internet. Furthermore the survey found that 1/4 of the female students searched the internet from coffee shops and 1/6 of the male students also searched the internet from coffee shops. If equal number of male and female students were surveyed then what fraction of students who search the internet do so from coffee shops?

a. 1/2

b. 3/4

c. 5/14

d. 7/9

e. 11/12

Take the number as theLCM of the denominators..
So 12. Therefore 12 females and 12 males..
Internet - 1/2 of 12 that is 6 females, and 2/3 of 12, that is 8 males.
Total students using internet =6+8=14
From coffee shop - 1/4 of 12 that is 3 females and 1/6 of 12 that is 2 males...
Total students using internet at coffee shops..3+2=5

As a fraction of total students, number of students using internet from coffee shop is 5/14

hello although I understood the question ,but I found the wording of the question a bit akward especially below line:
"Furthermore the survey found that 1/4 of the female students searched the internet from coffee shops and 1/6 of the male students also searched the internet from coffee shops"

Doesnt this line mean that survey is referring to 1/4 of students of 1/2 of the female population which is doing the internet search simlarly for males..
why is it that we are considering coffee shop population to be separate or new info seeing the question at first it looks to be in continuation of info .. while solving the question I initially considered the population of coffee shop to be a part of the one who are already searching the internet ..

i.e only females point considered...
supposedly females total =12
so accessing internet = 12/2= 6
and coffee shop = 6/4 = 3/2

where as what has been done to get answer :
supposedly females total =12
so accessing internet = 12/2= 6
and coffee shop = 12/4 = 3
..

Jazzmin : hello has the question been posted is worded correctly as given in source?

A survey of high school students found that \(\frac{1}{2}\) of the female students searched the Internet and\(\frac{2}{3}\) of the male students searched the Internet. Furthermore, the survey found that \(\frac{1}{4}\) of the female students searched the Internet from coffee shops and\(\frac{1}{6}\)of the male students also searched the Internet from coffee shops. If equal numbers of male and female students were surveyed, then what fraction of the students who search the Internet do so from coffee shops?

A) \(\frac{1}{2}\)

B) \(\frac{3}{4}\)

C) \(\frac{5}{14}\)

D) \(\frac{7}{9}\)

E) \(\frac{11}{12}\)

Total becomes 144, I generally take the LCM of all the fractions which are present in the question

If equal numbers of male and female students were surveyed(Given), this means that Number of males =Number of females

Female students searched the Internet = 36
Male students searched the Internet = 48

female students searched the Internet from coffee shops = 18 (1/4 *72)
male students searched the Internet from coffee shops = 12 (1/6 *72)

fraction of the students who search the Internet do so from coffee shops =30/84 = 5 /14

I agree, the wording here does not make it clear whether the fraction is of the people who utilize the internet or of the overall group.

Is there a source?
