5/8 is approx 62%
Leaving 38%
1/3 of 38= 12.66(13aprox)
That adds to 62+13=75
Therefore remaining 25% correspond to 40 therefor 1%=1.60 and 100%=160 approx

A woman spent \(\frac{5}{8}\) of her weekly salary on rent and \(\frac{1}{3}\) of the remainder on food, leaving $40 available for other expenses. What is the woman’s weekly salary?

(A) $160
(B) $192
(C) $216
(D) $240
(E) $256

We can let T = total salary and create the following equation:

T = (5/8)T + 1/3(3/8)T + 40

T = 5T/8 + T/8 + 40

T = 6T/8 + 40

T = 3T/4 + 40

T/4 = 40

T = 160
