Hi folks,

Please let me know what you think about who should write the recommendation letter. I can get one from my former manager and another from community service. But will it be more effective to get both the recommendations from workplace?

At workplace, during initial stages, my then team lead used to supervise me. But I got promoted and my team has now become my peer. Will an LOR from my former team lead be effective?

In general, is a letter from manager and another from peer acceptable or will it impact the chances of admission?

As far as I know, a letter needs to be supportive of who you are and what you claim to be on your application. Most schools require 2 letters and would necessitate the fact that one should be from your direct supervisor (unless there are reasons that you cannot do that, which you'd have to explain in the optional essay) and another person who will be able to speak of your values. It shouldn't matter if the second letter is from your manager or a peer, as long as he/she can speak highly of who you are. Person you don't want to ask a LOR from is your subordinate. I firmly believe that most letters from recommenders are always positive, so I don't think schools really base a whole of of their decisions on the letter. Rather, I think the schools use these letters to ensure themselves that the applicant can truly be vouched upon.
