According to a recent survey, majority of the people of Californiasupports recycling.

A majority of the people of California.
B a majority of the people of California.
C more than half of the people of California.
D more than half of the population of California.
E a majority of California's people

What's wrong with E?
I got this question from a review made by a professor teaching in a GMAT's course.

Thank you in advance!

hi gmatmania and whitehalo...

what is being checked in this question is singular/plural....
nonunderlined portion gives "supports", making the subject singular...
therefore we have to look for a singular subject.....
remember majority of .....noun.. will take verb depending on noun.... and here people is plural so "majority /a majority of people"
will take plural verb so E,A,B,C are out...
D changes people to population thus making the subject singular and correct..
hope it made sense..

Can you please help me with the question posted in the Cr's section regarding Ancient Greek?
Thank you

A majority of the people of California.
Incorrect. the idiom "majority of" must have the same number of what comes next; therefore, it is plural.
B a majority of the people of California.
Incorrect. Same as A.
C more than half of the people of California.
Incorrect. More is a indefinite pronoun that must have the same number of what comes next; therefore, it is plural.
D more than half of the population of California.
Correct.
E a majority of California's people
Incorrect. Same as A.

the verb is in singular, thus we need to make the subject singular. only D does that.

I didn't get it. 'Majority' is a collective noun so why isn't the option with 'majority' correct? Also I'm confused between 'majority' and 'a majority of people'. What should be used 'is' or 'are'?
