According to anthropologists, | the use of human language covers a wide spectrum | from practical communication | between people engaged in the same task | to establishing hierarchy | within a social group.

The same sentence in it's short form -
The use of human language covers a wide spectrum from practical communication to establishing hierarchy.

I don't see any problem with the given question. From a noun to another noun. "practical communication" is playing the role of a noun in it's wholesome and so is "establishing hierarchy". My take is A. what's the OA?

I'm also going with E since it is the only statement that has a consistent X & Y comparison. Throwing a lone -ing verb into the other four choices is not consistent.

1. engaged and establishing
2. engaging and establishment
3. engaged and establishing
4. engaging and established
5. engaged and establishment

OA is E, for the reasons stated by Igor010.

1]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to establishing hierarchy - not parallel - out
2]communicating practically between people engaging in the same task to the establishment of hierarchy - not parallel - out
3]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to the establishing of hierarchy - parallel, hold it.
4]communicating practically between people engaging in the same task to hierarchy established - not parallel - out
5]practical communication between people engaged in the same task to the establishment of hierarchy -parallel and is the best answer because we have two nouns here, while in C we have a noun and a complex gerund (that is a gerund that has "the"-article, which gives us the right to consider it a noun, but if we have a "real" noun (as in E) we should use it instead) . Without E, C would be the best answer.

I agree with the explanation for (E); moreover, I spot the same during my test. BUT I have a doubt: What is the rule in regard to the USE OF ARTICLE?

During the test, I understood that it's a simple case of parallelism: correct choice should be one of
1. both simple gerund or both complex gerund (preferred)
2. both action nouns (equally preferred)
3. one action noun and other complex gerund (preferred, but less compared to #1 and #2)

But I was very confused between (C) and (E). (E) although met the condition #2 above, BUT I was not sure about the use of the ARTICLE "the" in ""the establishment of hierarchy". Is there any rule in regard to the use of an article here? (C) has NO issue in terms of grammar as "the establishing ... " is a pure complex gerund and has no issue with the use of the article, in-fact the article makes it complex gerund.

Can somebody please help me clarify, so that on the test day I don't spend extra 30 secs pondering, even though I have figured out the right choice?

+1 for E.

establishing cannot be used as noun. Establishment is a noun. Hence C is wrong.

you r on the right track for the parallelism. Between c & E its E because establishment is the noun. Remember the caution as per Man SC... Don't think of complex gerund if noun already exits
