why is D wrong? it is also talking about leisure time just as option A is?

The passage doesn't any provide information about difference in time spent on leisure vs on commute by executives living in suburbs. It just states that some of the time spent on commuting by the suburban executives is spent on leisure by the urban executives. So we can't comment on leisure time spent by suburban executives.

Ace Motors, an automobile manufacturer headquartered in the city of Metropolis, recently administered a survey to all executives employed at their downtown headquarters. The survey found that, among executives with similar jobs, those living in the suburbs have less free time per week than do those that live in the city proper because some of the time spent on commuting by the suburban executives is spent on leisure by the urban executives.

Which of the following inferences is best supported by the statements made above?

A. Ace Motor's executives who live in the city spend less time commuting to work than do those who live in the suburbs.

B. The majority of Ace's executives live in the suburbs rather than near the downtown headquarters in Metropolis.

C. A handful of Ace Motor's executives live neither in the city nor in the surrounding suburbs, but fly in from out of town each week.

D. Ace Motor's executives who live in the suburbs spend more time commuting than they have for leisure.

E. Most of Ace's executives who live in the city walk to work each morning.

EXPLANATION:

A. Ace Motor's executives who live in the city spend less time commuting to work than do those who live in the suburbs.

Correct.
The passage explains that suburban executives lose leisure time because of commuting. For this to be true, suburban executives must spend more time commuting than city executives, which directly implies that city executives spend less time commuting than suburban executives.

B. The majority of Ace's executives live in the suburbs rather than near the downtown headquarters in Metropolis.

Incorrect.
The argument never mentions how many executives live in either place, only the relative time use of those who do. Majority/minority proportions cannot be inferred.

C. A handful of Ace Motor's executives live neither in the city nor in the surrounding suburbs, but fly in from out of town each week.

Incorrect.
This introduces a new category (“fly in from out of town”) not discussed in the passage. Outside scope.

D. Ace Motor's executives who live in the suburbs spend more time commuting than they have for leisure.

Incorrect.
The passage says suburban executives have less leisure than city executives. It does not say commuting time is greater than leisure time. That’s an extreme statement not supported.

E. Most of Ace's executives who live in the city walk to work each morning.

Incorrect.
The passage gives no information about how executives commute, only about the relative amount of time spent commuting.

Hence Correct Answer: A
