Hey asimov, havent thought too much about opting out of prereqs. Been looking at a few places to live, a 2nd yr student I talked to recommended Station 9, Alexan Place, and Pinnacle Ridge. Have you guys heard of any of these places?

This is really helpful:
https://cho.duhs.duke.edu/pdf_files/surv ... rtment.pdf

Station 9 is big with Fuqua people and Alexan (Farm and Place, there are two and they are not related) are popular as is Pinnacle Ridge, though the Alexans and PR seem more popular with the law school students. If you're single, these are definitely more "fun" places and you'd have a chance to meet more friends. I'd say PR and the Alexans are better if you have a dog. Station 9 is better for someone who wants to be able to go out easily without having to cab.

So I was bored today and compiled the 2009 version of this survey into a spreadsheet (attached). About five minutes later, much to my disappointment, I found a Fuqua version on the MBAA website (link).
mbaa.fuqua.duke.edu/indus/documents/ApartmentAnalysis.xls

Maybe I'll combine them into one if I get a few minutes.

@highhopes: I dig the approach. My wife's going to be moving out ahead of me and so we're likely going to have to choose a place site (and area) unseen, so this objective data is a huge plus.

Does anyone know if it is common to do a 12-mth lease in one of the more popular buildings for MBA students the first year? Do most students move in during mid to late July? I'm thinking that if my internship ends up being out of state and assuming the same goes for a full-time offer, then a 9 / 10-mths lease may work out better (save $$)

Anyone admitted EA, have children. I am uprooting my wife and now one year old son. Seeing if anyone is in a similar situation as I am. Also, I am looking for housing suggestions. Having a 70lb dog doesn't help either. We have pretty much conceeded we might need to rent a 3 bedroom house in the neighborhood of 1200-1400.

Hopefully I'll be in the same situation as you in a few days :)....

But seriously, 1400 for a 3 bedroom house sounds really nice right now. I guess its all relative.

Hey guys all the info here especially the housing related is extremely useful. Thanks!!!!

I am in a similar situation. I will be having a child by the time I join Fuqua. Not sure ...should I bring my wife and the one month old baby there or not. Maybe I would bring them there a year later. I am coming to US first time and probably won't have a car immediately.
Any suggestions about housing?

I have heard
1) It's difficult to get a nine month lease, though it seems possible to get a 21 month lease some places if you sign right away for the whole time.
2) Most people don't do this because of the extreme pain in the butt it would be to store your stuff for what could be just two months time.
3) Some intern employers will partially reimburse you if you have to pay rent in two places.

From a personal perspective, I guess I wouldn't want to leave a kid that young behind for a year. There's a lot of exciting stuff that will happen in that first year. Heck, I'm sad about moving so far away from my niece who will be about six months :( . I'm not sure what situation you'll be coming from though and what your financial situation is.

I think a lot of families will rent a house.

I saw a lot of little ones running around Fuqua, so at least if you do bring the little one, you'll have company.

Yeh you are right in one way...its going to be painful to be away from the new born baby. But I am skeptical about the sudden climate and social change . If I come alone initially at least part of the shock will be absorbed by me. Lets see.

Which group did you try to join?

"Fuqua School: Class of 2012" looks like a group of high school kids, I dont think its Duke, so dont be TOO discouraged. :D

I think as an international student coming to the US, you would want your wife and child with you, especially for a full year. You probably want them to get the full experience as well. As I have been told, the Fuqua Partners have a better time at Fuqua than the students do. Secondly, I am in the US military and have been separated from my wife and son on multiple occasions for 6 or more months...believe me it is not fun when you only communication is email and the occasional phone call. Lastly, what is your wife's support network back in your home country? I would not fell comfortable leaving her behind if she did not have a strong support network (mother/father, siblings, aunt/uncles, close friends)...particuarlly in the first few months of your child's life. I can tell you the first 3-6 months is brutal on parents and if you wife is alone...bless her soul because she will be borderline suicidal by the end of it.

I don't want to discourage you or make you change your plans. Just wanted to give you a few things for you and your wife to discuss. Another question is: Are you planning on staying in the US after Fuqua to work or return to your home country? Of course that should have a significant play in your planning process. The biggest question is...does you wife want to come with you or is she indifferent either way? That is probably the biggest part of the equation.

The welcome student site has been pretty bare since EA. I think they'll start updating it later.

The facebook group must be newly created. I just got an e-mail inviting me to join.

yeh I know you are not discouraging me.... 8-) She is keen on being at Duke in due course, in fact she wants to join Duke healthcare for a higher fellowship ( she is a practicing radiation oncologist ).
She herself is not confident about child care as she has a good support network back home. Now we are planning to bring her here slightly earlier .... may be 7-8 months.
