Argument Analysis
Premise 1: Advancement in technology occurs primarily in areas where customers have expressed an interest.
Premise 2: Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology.
Conclusion: Future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses.

Identifying the Assumption
An assumption is an unstated premise that must be true for the argument to hold. Here, the conclusion depends on the premise that the advancements will be useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses.

Analyzing Each Option
(A) The demand for standard telecommunications technology is affected by increased demand for advancements in such technology.

This option discusses the relationship between standard and advanced telecommunications technology. However, the argument does not address the impact of demand for standard technology on advancements.

(B) Advancements in technology are mainly brought about by desire from a particular group of customers.

This option restates part of the first premise but does not directly connect to the exclusivity of the usefulness of future advancements.

(C) Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.

This option directly supports the conclusion. If improved telecommunications technology is not generally applicable to all customers, it will be useful primarily to those specific businesses demanding it. This is the assumption that must be true for the conclusion to hold.

(D) The number of advancements made in telecommunications technology increases when different kinds of businesses demand it.

This option talks about the quantity of advancements relative to the variety of businesses demanding them. It does not address the exclusivity of usefulness to the certain businesses mentioned.

(E) Most customers do not keep up with new developments in telecommunications technology.

This option comments on customers' awareness or engagement with new developments but does not directly affect the argument's conclusion about exclusivity of usefulness.

Conclusion
The correct answer is (C): Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers. This is the assumption that bridges the gap between the premises and the conclusion, ensuring that the future advancements in telecommunications technology will be useful almost exclusively to the certain businesses demanding them.

Advancement in technology occurs primarily in areas in which customers have expressed an interest. Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology. Accordingly, future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses.

Which of the following is an assumption made in the argument above?

(A) The demand for standard telecommunications technology is affected by increased demand for advancements in such technology.

(B) Advancements in technology are mainly brought about by desire from a particular group of customers.

(C) Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.

(D) The number of advancements made in telecommunications technology increases when different kinds of businesses demand it.

(E) Most customers do not keep up with new developments in telecommunications technology
Let us understand the para and think of likely assumptions. It always helps in the actuals if we are able to spend some time during practices and analyze a para before moving to options.

The para is
  • Advancement in technology occurs primarily in areas in which customers have expressed an interest. => Just a statement/premise. So, not always but most of the time interest of customers initiates advancement in technology in that field.
  • Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology. => Again a premise. Taking the above premise further, we are told that few specific businesses are interested in tele tech.
  • Accordingly, future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses. => A conclusion is finally drawn. The advancements in tele tech would benefit those specific businesses almost exclusively.
We can see there is a gap between the conclusion and the premises. Why do we feel that the advancements in tele tech would help only those who had shown interest in it?
  • It could be because the advancement is sought by everyone who is likely to get benefited by it, and also by only those who are likely to get benefited by it.
Does any option takes us close to the above thinking.

(A) The demand for standard telecommunications technology is affected by increased demand for advancements in such technology.
We are looking at the connection between interest in advancement and benfit being accrued through it.

(B) Advancements in technology are mainly brought about by desire from a particular group of customers.
We are not talking of interest by a particular group. The para never talks of the advancement coming through only when a particular group desires. It could be set A or set B of completely different people seeking advancement.

(C) Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.
So, this option does connect the dots and tries to fill gaps. However, not a very convincing point. It could be applicable to all but one customer. So, this all will consist of the particular group intersetd and all others except Mr X, who deals in say food manufacture. Not very convincing but keep it because it connects the dots to fill a bit of gap.

(D) The number of advancements made in telecommunications technology increases when different kinds of businesses demand it.
Again, we are looking at the connection between interest in advancement and benfit being accrued through it.

(E) Most customers do not keep up with new developments in telecommunications technology
Does not help in filling the gap between interest and benefit.

Only possible answer is C.

"Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology. Accordingly, future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses."

IMO This is the key point; not all businesses are interested in improving telecommunications technology.
Therefore, the conslusion is only those businesses that are demanding advancements in telecommunications technology will bear the fruit of it.
If you negate option C "Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers." then it breaks the conclusion. Hence C
