After clinching business worth several hundred billion dollars every year, India’s IT industry as well as its cousin BPO industry, both of which develop software programs and outsource business processes respectively for global major corporates that handle such diverse things as space journeys to shaving soaps, appear to be softening out due to the recent economic gloom.
(A) as space journeys to shaving soaps, appear to be softening out
(B) like space journeys to shaving soaps, appears to be softening out

Indian's IT as well as BPO industry, [modifier], appears to be softening out.
Only when 'and' is used we can use the plural form. In this case 'as well as' is used. Hence verb conjugation has to be singular. Hence A,D & E are out..
Between B &C. B is incorrect because 'like' cannot be used in this context when we are using examples.

I pick C. Correct use of the idiom "such as" and "from...to.." A- Incorrect: the verb should be "appears" since we are dealing with a singular subject. B- Incorrect use of the idiom "such..like". D- Incorrect: No need of the progressive tense. E- Incorrect "are appearing"

I didn't know that 'as well as' does not take plural verbs. I'd pick A 100 times out of 100.
Additive phrases such as: along with accompanied by in addition to together with as well as including A and B
But unlike and additive phrases do not form compound subjects. Rather they act as modifiers and therefore can not change the the number of the subject.
