GOvernment involvement in the industry is more detrimental then helpful to that industry. As proof of this consider two comparable industries: the urban mass transit and the airline business. The former has generally been subsidized and operated by by local governments, and in most cities service is poor and deteriorating. By contrast, the privately owned and operated airlines earn profits and provide, fo rthe most part fast, and effecient service.
Which of the following if true would least weaken the arguement?
1) Passenger complains about airline scheduling and service have increased rapidly and are now greater then ever before.
2) Privately owned mass transit systems do not have the problems similar to those of government operated systems.
3) The government subsidizes airport construction operation and offers tax breaks to airlines.
4) Technological advances in air travel have allowed ailines to operate more efficiently, but no similar advances have occured in rail travel
5) On average, airline ticket prices have increased faster then the mass transit fares over the past ten years.

I will go with A on this. Explanation will follow if answer is correct
This is my logic. If the compliants are more than ever before then does it mean that they are more than those of government owned transit system?. A does not compare the problems with private and public tranportation system.
B on the other hand compares private transit system with public transit system and says that they dont have similar problems. Since they dont have similar problems they may not be comparable. Hence it weakens the argument more than does A.
This is a VERY good question. My pick is B. The wording of the question is very misleading though.
A) Premise says that the airline industry has "for the most part fast, and effecient service." (A) directly contradicts it and thus weakens the argument.
C) This is the one choice that MOST weaken the argument. It directly says that the airline industry's success is based on it being subsidized by the government.
D) Says that the problem does not rely on government involvement but rather on the airline industry being technologically privileged. It thus weakens the argument
E) Again, E says that it's not the government involvement that is the problem of the mass transit but rather the lesser ticket price increase of the mass transit system (which puts it at a disadvantage vs the airline industry)
Only B actually strenghens the argument by acknowledging that YES INDEED the government has many problems which are not present in the private system. Therefore, the government's problems will then CAUSE the mass transit to be less efficient.
