A comparison has to be always between two similar entity. Only E does this. In other options, Alan Hovhaness's body of work is compared to Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi in all the options.
There is another error - has written/wrote. Wrote should be used, as he already completed his writings.

Meaning Analysis

Alan Hovhaness, one of most prolific composers of the 20th century. His body of work is about the same as the body of work of Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi. Vivaldi wrote about 500 concertos.

Error Analysis and Elimination

Quick look at the options shows us that Alan's body of work in A, B, C, D are being compared directly with Italian composer Antonio.
We always compare like with like. E.g 'work' with 'work', and not 'work' with 'person'. No options are parallel except E, as E correctly uses "that" to refer to "the body of work" of Antonio Vivaldi.
Eliminate A, B, C, D.

Extra Errors (Not needed, but for learning purpose)

We've found the answer as E. However, for sake of learning, below are more errors in each of the other options.
A & D: "who has written" is present perfect tense. Present perfect tense serves 2 main functions:
>1st function is that a present perfect tense talks about events that started in the past but we don't know when it happened or was completed. E.g "I have been to China" (present perfect "have") v/s "I went to China in 1975" (simple past "went").
>2nd function of present perfect tense is to talk about events that happened in the recent past. E.g: A boss telling his subordinate, "I have given you the task". So ofcourse when she/he says "I gave you the task", she/he might imply "I gave it to you long back"

Here we are given a definite time in the past, that is 20th Century, so we use simple present tense "Vivaldi wrote approx. 500 concertos"

B: "whom has written" - apart from the tense as discussed for A & D, here "whom" is also incorrect as we use "whom" to modify 'object' of the sentence. In this case "Vivaldi wrote approx. 500 concertos", therefore Vivaldi is the subject and concertos is the object.

C: Parallelism error as shared with all other options except E.

Cheers!

A. about the same as Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, who has written
Comparison Error: This option incorrectly compares the work of Alan Hovhaness directly with composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, an illogical comparison. Logically the comparison must be either between the two composers or between the work of each of them.
Tense Error: The present participle 'has written' gives an impression that Antonio Lucio is still writing or has just finished writing, something that is not the case here because the composers are from the 20th century. Hence, usage of present perfect tense is incorrect; instead use simple past wrote.

B. of about the same as the Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, whom has written

This option fixes all the Grammar and Meaning Errors; the work of Alan Hovhaness is correctly compared with the work of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi; the tense issue is resolved by the usage of simple past tense.

There may be no best/excellent answers, or a there may be a few excellent answers!

Official Explanation:

Since the comparison is between the two composers’ body of work the correction would be:“that is about the same as that of Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, who wrote”; however, since this is not one of the answer options we will have to use the answers. (A), (B), (C), and (D)all make a false comparison between the work of Alan Hovhaness and the composer Vivaldi himself. Answer E is the only answer option that makes a proper comparison.

Hi Darshi04 / aragonn,

If option D would have been "comparable to the Italian composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldis', who wrote" than it would have been correct?

Hello Gmatprep550

Interesting question.

The rule while comparing is that you compare apples to apples and always keep in mind the real intended meaning.

For e.g someone's "work" is being compared with the "work" of Antonio.

Your hypothetical change to option D seems correct, as there is no need to repeat the noun "work" after the apostrophe in Vivaldi. (As the apostrophe here implies "work").
But this would be best confirmed by aragonn

Gmatprep550 - Who can not be used for someone's work. So this usage is wrong. Moreover 'Has written' would be inappropriate. It seems "500 concertos" already over(writing) for Vivaldi. Overall this one will introduce many new mistakes. Answer must be well composed at all front. Be sure you are not able to find any mistakes such as this while forming a choice.

i was simply able to pick E because "that" gave away the answer. if I replace that with "body" it forms a complete sentence.
