Can someone provide an explanation for the 2nd question?

Official Explanation

2. Why does the author mention ‘the President of another republic’ (Highlighted) in the passage?

Difficulty Level: 600-650

Explanation

The author mentions the President of another country to give an example of a situation in which the work of a person was appreciated after his death. Hence, (D) is the correct answer.

(A) The use of ‘every’ makes this extreme.

(B) and (E) The author is not specifically concerned with the case of Pierre Proudhon. He is stating a more general observation.

(C) The passage makes no claim about ‘all’ countries.

Answer: D

Whats the answer of question no.1 ?

Correct Answer for Qestion no 1 is (B) for the following reasons

1. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the passage?

(A) To criticize the press for slandering Emma Goldman’s name

It has been stated only in the following part "The sensational press has surrounded her name with so much misrepresentation and slander, it would seem almost a miracle that, in spite of this web of calumny" by the end of the passage, the author clearly delivers his message " the living generation should be concerned with doing justice to the LIVING....." so (A) Can not be the correct answer as it covers a part only.

(B) To argue that people should be given credit for their achievements when they are alive and not posthumously

Check carefully, this has been repeated in various places using names of various personalities (As example) to support the authors idea.

(C) To question the intent of those who unveil statues of eminent people after their death but belittle them when they are alive

It's only a part of the passage , the author has a clear message , as discussed in (A) and the concluding line " but it is the duty of their contemporaries to bring them due recognition and appreciation while they live." clearly states it !!! So (C) can be rejected.

(D) To state that several eminent personalities such as Emma Goldman and John Brown have been unfairly treated in the past

May be its True (As per authors narration) the conclusion is something different and the author uses the names of these personalities to deliver his message as already stated in (A) and (D)

(E) To explain that every proponent of a new idea has always had to struggle and face difficulties in putting his or her views across

Just a part of first few lines, it can never be the main purpose of the author, the main purpose has been stated as already discussed in (A) and (D)

Can someone provide an explanation for the 2nd question?
Why does the author mention ‘the President of another republic’ (Highlighted) in the passage?
So the above one is th question and I solved it using the elimination method.

(A) To assert that every proponent of a new idea has had to face difficulties in the past
This statement in a way is mentioned in the passage but this is out of context. Because no one have talked about president to be suffering because of the idea.

(B) To state that Pierre Proudhon had been unfairly treated by his contemporaries when he was alive
This statement might be reflected in the passage but is not the answer of the above question because the question asks WHY?
Why author mentions ?
and this statement is just the information given in the passage but not the explanation.

(C) To demonstrate that a situation discussed earlier in the passage is prevalent in every country of the world
Every country in the world in not mentioned anyhwere. Easy to be eliminated.

(D) To provide the example of an incident in which the good work of a person was appreciated only after his death
Here you can see as author is providing examples and also it can be related with the last lines of the passage.
I will go with the answer D.

(E) To demand that Pierre Proudhon be given some compensation for the unjust treatment meted out to him when he was alive
Not mentioned anywhere, can be easily eliminated
