Analysis of mock test from GMAT Prep

Question

Hi all,

I took yesterday my first mock GMAT from the mba.com plateform, I scored 640 (V30 & Q48) and had like 3 minutes left at the end of each section.

I don't know how to analyze these results.

On the first hand, it is my first mock after nearly a month of prep with egmat plateform, I went only through SC and nearly finished Number Properties. So I am quite happy about that score.

On the second hand, I had 14 wrong questions out of 31 in Quant and also 14 wrong questions out of 36 in verbal (SC 71% accuracy, RC 62% & CR 44%).

How can I achieve these scores with such low accuracy in both Q & V ? 
From your opinions how should i continue my prep to achieve a 680+ on the real exam?

faycalshb  - No denying the fact that reviewing GMAT practice tests is the most tedious part during preparation for the test. Most test-takers, including me, do not review practice tests and therefore continue making the same mistakes repeatedly, leading to no score improvement in subsequent tests. GMAT Prep does not provide explanations of practice test questions. You would have to work a little harder by reviewing the questions from reliable sources, such as GMAT Club. We have discussed all old and new official questions - look for explanations by experts on GMAT Club.

Hello,  faycalshb . I will address each question you posed one by one, but first, I want to say that I agree with what  DisciplinedPrep  wrote already, and I think the name says it all, really. To hit a target score, you are going to have to put in the time and effort to achieve such a result. Speaking specifically to the point made about tracking down explanations to official practice questions, you can find them one after another by typing out the first few words of the question stem as a search, or also by using a few keywords. That is typically good enough to bring up the exact question in the first few search results.

Your score is based way more on the level of difficulty of the questions you are missing and answering correctly than on the strict number of questions you are missing. I remember, too, missing way more Quant questions than I was accustomed to the first time I laid eyes on an official practice test, but the section score came out fine. That is just how the test is calibrated to find your ceiling in Verbal and Quantitative measures.

It sounds as though you are starting with high-quality preparation materials, so as long as you continue to learn strategy from resources you find useful and combine that knowledge with practice through official questions--the OG is the single best source out there--you should have no trouble hitting your mark. It just depends on how much time you have and how diligently you are able to practice. Some people like to crank everything out in a month, while others feel more at ease with a study plan that stretches across several months.

From what i understood, i should go through all the Practice test questions and understand the subjects i made mistakes in and try to improve my knowledge on them.

I'll do this homework and try to score better next month.

Regarding scoring, to reiterate, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things.

Hi faycalshb,

To start, a 640 is a fantastic initial CAT Score (the Average Score on the Official GMAT hovers around 550 most years). In addition, assuming that you took this CAT in a realistic fashion (that matches up with what you'll face on the Official GMAT), then you're fairly close a to 680+ right now.
 
"Review" is an exceptionally important part of the GMAT training process; your ability to define WHY you're getting questions wrong is essential to defining the areas that you need to work on (and the specific things that you need to 'fix'). As such, I'd like to know a bit more about this CAT. While a full Mistake Tracker would provide a lot more information, there are some basic questions that you should be able to answer (and the more EXACT you can be with your answers, the better):

After reviewing each section of this recent CAT, how many questions did you get wrong....
1) Because of a silly/little mistake?
2) Because there was some math/verbal that you just could not remember how to do?
3) Because the question was too hard?
4) Because you were low on time and had to guess?
5) How many Verbal questions did you 'narrow down to 2 choices' but still get wrong?

I'm not able to find the Time Management tab in the Mock analysis module of GMAC ?? I'm thinking of analyzing my attempt in GMAC tests, but it's really difficult to complete the analysis here.

Please suggest if there is a better way to do so??

Hello,  HarshaBujji . The only way I know of to get any time management data from your official practice exams is to set up some sort of stopwatch system (e.g., phone)  while  you are taking the test. You are not missing anything—GMAC™ simply does not provide insight into time management on its practice exams. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I love data myself, but perhaps this knowledge may help you prepare for your next attempts.

Hey HarshaBujji The 'Time Management' tab is opening up for me (See the attached pic). I gave three mocks to date, and for every mock, it is showing up. Can I know when did you give your mock? And is it the 1st Mock?

I think the analysis of my 1st mock showed up after a week. But for the 2nd and 3rd mock, the time management tab was available as soon as I end the test. SO SO you wait for a week. Then check your account
