The following appeared in the promotional literature for Cerberus dog food.
“Obesity is a great problem among pet dogs, just as it is among their human owners. Obesity in humans is typically caused by consuming more calories than the body needs. For humans, a proper diet for losing weight is a reduced-calorie diet that is high in fiber and carbo hydrates but low in fat. Therefore, the best way for dog owners to help their dogs lose weight in a healthy way is to restrict the dog’s diet to Cerberus reduced-calorie dog food, which is high in fiber and carbohydrates but low in fat.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . .etc.
In the argument, author claims that as the human being, dogs are also facing the same over weight problem. The conclusion cited that dogs should consume those foods which are high in fiber and carbs but low in fat because this technique is helpful to fight against obesity. However, this argument is flawed because it fails to supply sufficient evidence in favor of the author’s conclusion.
First of all, the argument readily assumes that the causes of obesity among dogs are similar to the causes among humans. But this assumption is questionable because they have mentioned that more calories consumption leads to the over weight problems among humans but didn’t mention anything about dogs. As we know, obesity can happen due to many other reasons such as, recent health condition, medicine consumption, daily routine, quality of food etc. Hence, without knowing the actual causes of obesity among dogs we can not predict that the dogs are facing same weight gaining problem as human.
Secondly, the argument also implies that as human are following low calorie diet plan for obesity problem where they are consuming foods like high in fiber and carbo hydrates but low in fat, dogs should also consume in the same way to get effective result. But they undermine the fact that humans and dogs have vast difference in physicality. For example, human and dong have differences in physical structure, immune system, food habits, life style etc. Therefore, without proper evidence it is totally inappropriate to use the same diet plan for two different creatures to fight against obesity.
In light of the above unsubstantiated assumptions and poor evidence, the argument is flawed. It could be considerably strengthened, if the author mentions the proper reasons of the obesity problem between humans and dogs. Also, it might be a great risk for dogs to use same diet plan as human without knowing the physical condition. Nevertheless, if the aforementioned concerns are not addressed it will remain unconvincing.
