“
This past winter, 200 students from Waymarsh State College traveled to the state capitol building to protest against
proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t
so concerned about their education: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since the group who did
not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters.
Therefore the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.”
The argument states that the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students because students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education by citing an evidence that only 200 out of 1200 students of college participated in the protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs . The conclusion of argument is based on assumption for which no clear evidence is presented. Hence, the argument is flawed/weak and have several flaws.
Firstly, the argument states that the 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education by citing a claim: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break during the time of protest. Clearly, argument does not provide any clear evidence of why students did not attended the protest. May be students were unknown about the protest or may be students were not available at the time of protest or may be students were busy in there college exams during that time.
Secondly, the conclude that the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students because the group who did
not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters. Clearly, it is nowhere mentioned that why only 200 students participated in the protest and who motivated others to be stayed on campus. The reason may be that college officials had decided the strength of the protesters( number of students who will take part in protest)
or may be that college provided the transportation facility for limited students. In result, the real reason may weaken the conclusion.
Finally, the argument does not provide evidence about the incentive of the college’ staff who overall motivated the students for the protest. May be staff did so for the incentive to just get appreciation from the college higher authority or to be good in the eyes of the college’ students union.
In conclusion, the argument is flawed for above mentioned reasons and is unconvincing. Some more relatable evidence must be included to make argument more appealing or strong. Without these point of consideration , the argument is weak and is open to debate.
