Our department is going through a restructuring and I have been placed on a team with a lot more responsibility, not more money and of course am starting the process of studying for the GMAT, taking foundation classes (calculus, statistics, etc.) since it was ten years ago that I took those for my undergrad business degree, and of course going for interviews at business schools once I do get all the previous items in check. I am considering asking for a lower position in my department so that I can eliminate stress, and stay focused on getting into the best school possible.
Does anyone think that this is a good move or a bad move? The position I just was placed into with the restructure is not along the lines of what I want to do after earning my MBA. The lower position would allow me to get the department more organized (it is a mess) so it would give me a ton of projects with not nearly as strict deadlines while not inconveniencing my colleagues if I suddenly had to go out of town for an interview and they had to pick up the slack.
Any thoughts? Especially from anyone who has been through this before?

I don't think taking a demotion will be especially helpful in your application process. This demotion will automatically become a red flag on your application and will remain a scrutiny until you're admitted. However, keep in mind that a lot of top b-school applicants are working in jobs that will require more than just 40 hours per week. Consider ibankers who work over 70 hours a week and still were able to study GMAT and apply. I'm not saying that everyone's like that, but taking a demotion is sort-of sending a message to the AdComs by saying that you can't handle the pressure. I personally wouldn't recommend this path.

I would second bakfed - top business schools are not looking to admit those who scored 760 and took a comfy position to study for 4 months. (they prefer not to admit "professional" applicants who are trying to get in for the sake of getting out of their current life/career/etc and who are spending more time on applying than on their daily job) They are looking for 690+ who has been working 24/7 non stop, hardly cares if he/she gets in and has a fantastic career (which can be enhanced by MBA). Your best chances is when they sense that you don't need them - then they really want you.
At the end, you want them to feel as though MBA was a planned path, and it would be a great sin for them not to admit you, but at the same time, you want them to feel as though you don't need them really. They do like to admit successful applicants, who can go much further with an MBA but can succeed regardless.
